Let There Be Light (1917 Film)
''Let There Be Light'' (german: Es werde Licht!) is a 1917 German silent drama film directed by Richard Oswald and starring Bernd Aldor, Hugo Flink and Nelly Lagarst. It was followed by three sequels. The film was a protest against Germany's anti-abortion law, and also touched on the dangers of syphilis. It is a lost film. The film's sets were designed by the art director August Rinaldi. Manfred Noa was employed as an artistic consultant. Richard Oswald
Richard Oswald (5 November 1880 – 11 September 1963) was an Austrian film director, producer, screenwriter, and father of German-American film director Gerd Oswald. Early career Richard Oswald, born in Vienna as Richard W. Ornstein, began his career as an actor on the Viennese stage. He made his film directorial debut at age 34 with ''The Iron Cross'' (1914) and worked a number of times for Jules Greenbaum. In 1916, Oswald set up his own production company in Germany, writing and directing most of his films himself. His pre-1920 efforts include such literary adaptations as ''The Picture of Dorian Gray'' (1917), '' Peer Gynt'' (1919), the once scandalous ''Different from the Others'' (1919) and ''Around the World in Eighty Days'' (1919). Oswald directed nearly 100 films. Max Gülstorff
Max Walter Gülstorff (23 March 1882 – 6 February 1947) was a German actor and stage director. Biography Gülstorff was born in Tilsit, East Prussia. He first appeared in 1900 at the Rudolstadt municipal Theater and moved to Cottbus in 1908. In 1911 Gülstorff went to the ''Schillertheater'' Berlin and became a member of the ensemble of Max Reinhardt's Deutsches Theater in 1915. He also acted at the Großes Schauspielhaus and the Volksbühne Berlin. In 1923 Gülstorff moved to Vienna, where he worked as a stage director at the Theater in der Josefstadt The Theater in der Josefstadt is a theater in Vienna in the eighth district of Josefstadt. Hans Walter Conrad Veidt (; 22 January 1893 – 3 April 1943) was a German film actor who attracted early attention for his roles in the films ''Different from the Others'' (1919), '' The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'' (1920), and ''The Man Who Laughs'' (1928). After a successful career in German silent films, where he was one of the best-paid stars of UFA, he and his new Jewish wife Ilona Prager left Germany in 1933 after the Nazis came to power. The couple settled in Britain, where he took British citizenship in 1939. He appeared in many British films, including '' The Thief of Bagdad'' (1940), before emigrating to the United States around 1941, which led to his being cast in what may be his best remembered role as Major Strasser in ''Casablanca'' (1942). This was Veidt's last film role to be released during his lifetime.
