Leslie P. Newman
Leslie Patrick Gilwell "Les" Newman OAM, FAMI (November 29, 1930 – March 12, 2015) was an Australian professional ballroom dancer, businessman, company director and performing arts administrator. He was regarded as an icon of the dance industry. Early life and business career Newman was born in Collingwood, an inner suburb of Melbourne, Australia. He was educated at University High School in Parkville and gained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Wisconsin University. For 34 years Les Newman was President of Comdance Inc. He became Chairman of the Australian Dancing Board, President of VicDance Inc., Vice Chairman of the Pacific Council of Dancing and Australian delegate to the World Dance Council and the international DanceSport Council /sup>. The Order of Australia is an honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, on the advice of the Australian Government. Hip hop dance is a range of street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music or that have evolved as part of hip hop culture. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. ''Hey Hey It's Saturday'' was a long-running variety television program on Australian television. It initially ran for 28 years on the Nine Network from 9 October 1971 to 20 November 1999, with a recess in 1978.
