''Les Misérables'' is a 1978 British television film, made-for-television film adaptation of the Les Misérables, 1862 novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. The film was written by John Gay (screenwriter), John Gay, produced by Lew Grade, and directed by Glenn Jordan (no relation to star Richard Jordan). The film originally aired on U.S. television on CBS on 27 December 1978. Plot The plot follows the general outline of the Les Misérables#Plot, novel of the same name, omitting many details and some entire episodes. The narrative is strictly chronological and avoids the digressions required to mirror the novel's structure. Many of the novel's minor characters do not appear or are combined. Claude Dauphin (actor)
Claude Dauphin (19 August 1903 – 16 November 1978) was a French actor. He appeared in more than 130 films between 1930 and 1978. Biography He was born in Corbeil-Essonnes, Essonne. His father was Maurice Étienne Legrand, a poet who wrote as Franc-Nohain, and who was the librettist for Maurice Ravel's opera ''L'heure espagnole''. His elder brother was the writer Jean Nohain. Dauphin's debut on film came in ''La Vagabonde'' (1930). He debuted on stage in ''Chapeau Chinois'' (1930) in Paris. Private life Dauphin married three times: first to Rosine Derean, then to the actress Maria Mauban with whom he had a child, Jean-Claude Dauphin, also an actor. Eventually, in 1955, Dauphin married American actress Norma Eberhardt. The couple divided their time between Paris, Los Angeles, New York City and Ocean Township, New Jersey. Cyril Cusack
Cyril James Cusack (26 November 1910 – 7 October 1993) was an Irish stage and screen actor with a career that spanned more than 70 years. Gavroche () is a fictional character in the 1862 novel ''Les Misérables'' by Victor Hugo. He is a boy who lives on the streets of Paris. His name has become a synonym for an urchin or street child. Gavroche plays a short yet significant role in the many adaptations of ''Les Misérables'', sharing the populist ideology of the Friends of the ABC and joining the revolutionaries in the June 1832 rebellion. The Thénardiers, commonly known as (; ) and , are fictional characters, and the secondary antagonists in Victor Hugo's 1862 novel and in many adaptations of the novel into other media. They are ordinary working-class people who blame society for their sufferings. Early in the novel, they own an inn and cheat their customers. After they lose the inn in bankruptcy, they change their name to and live by begging and petty thievery. Fantine (French pronunciation: ) is a fictional character in Victor Hugo's 1862 novel ''Les Misérables''. She is a young '' grisette'' in Paris who becomes pregnant by a rich student. After he abandons her, she is forced to look after their child, Cosette, on her own. Javert (), no first name given in the source novel, is a fictional character and the main antagonist of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel ''Les Misérables.'' He was presumably born in 1780 and died on June 7, 1832. First a prison guard, and then a police inspector, his character is defined by his legalist tendencies and lack of empathy for criminals of all forms.
