Leonese People's Union
The Leonese People's Union ( es, Unión del Pueblo Leonés, links=, Leonese: ''Unión del Pueblu Llionés'', UPL) is a regional political party in Castilla y León, Spain. UPL strives to establish a separate autonomous community ( Comunidad Autónoma de León or ''Autonomous Community of León'') for the provinces of León, Zamora and Salamanca (center of the old Kingdom of León), now in the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. Such a movement is known as Leonesism. History UPL was founded in 1986 by a group of people coming from different León regionalist movements and various statewide parties ( Popular Alliance, Union of the Democratic Centre, Spanish Socialist Workers' Party). Luis Mariano Santos
Luis Mariano Santos Reyero (born 1969) is a Spanish politician who is the Secretary General of the Leonese People's Union. He was the party's sole representative elected to the Cortes of Castile and León in 2015 and 2019, and one of three elected in 2022. Biography Born in Cistierna, Province of León, he graduated in Political Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and has a Master's degree in Human Resources. As of 2015, he had been a councillor in his hometown for 12 years. In March 2015, he was chosen as his party's list leader for the Castilian-Leonese regional election in May, having previously been number 2 to Alejandro Valderas. The 1991 Castilian-Leonese regional election was held on Sunday, 26 May 1991, to elect the 3rd Cortes of the autonomous community of Castile and León. All 84 seats in the Cortes were up for election. A percentage point or percent point is the unit (measurement), unit for the Difference (mathematics), arithmetic difference between two percentages. For example, moving up from 40 percent to 44 percent is an increase of 4 percentage points, but a 10-percent increase in the quantity being measured. The Cortes of Castile and León (Spanish: ''Cortes de Castilla y León'') is the elected unicameral legislature of the Autonomous Community of Castile and León. The tradition of the regional Cortes is traced back to the Royal Council (Latin: '' Curia Regis'') of León (1188). The ''Curia Regis'' was a king's summons of the estates of the realm. Although the practical outcome of the Curia Regis of 1188 is still disputed, its charter seems to be an early move towards the rule of constitutional law, much like ''Magna Carta''. Leonese Language
Leonese ( ast-leo, Llionés, ast, Lleonés) is a set of vernacular Romance language varieties currently spoken in northern and western portions of the historical region of León in Spain (the modern provinces of León, Zamora, and Salamanca) and a few adjoining areas in Portugal. In this narrow sense, Leonese is distinct from the dialects grouped under the Asturian language. There is no real linguistic division, though; it is only a purely political and identitary division, as dialectal areas (western, central, eastern...) are in fact shaped along a north-south axis (thus encompassing lands both north and south of the mountains, both in Asturias and in Castile and León). Conceyu Xoven
Conceyu Xoven ("Young Council" in Leonese) was a Spanish political youth organization that demanded the self-determination of the proposed Leonese Country. It was affiliated with the Leonese People's Union as its youth wing until April 2010, when they were replaced by the Leonesist Youth. Conceyu Xoven claimed to have had more than 1,500 members and to have been the most important organization in the Leonese Country, having won the University of León elections for students.
