Leitrim County Football Team
The Leitrim county football team ( ) represents Leitrim in men's Gaelic football and is governed by Leitrim GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, the Connacht Senior Football Championship, and the National Football League. The team last won the Connacht Senior Championship in 1994 but has never won the All-Ireland Senior Championship or the National League. Considered "Connacht's traditional minnows", Leitrim is never considered seriously as likely to win a major title. Leitrim's home ground is Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada, Carrick-on-Shannon. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. John O'Mahony (Mayo Politician)
John O'Mahony (born 8 June 1953) is an Irish former Fine Gael politician and former football manager who served as a Senator from 2016 to 2020, after being nominated by the Taoiseach. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Mayo constituency from 2007 to 2016. Early and personal life O'Mahony is a native of Kilmovee, County Mayo. He is a graduate of University College Galway. He taught for many years at St Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon. O'Mahony is married to Gerardine Towey, they have five daughters. Sports career O'Mahony was manager of the Mayo Gaelic football team, and formerly led Galway to two All-Ireland Senior Football Championship victories in 1998 and 2001, and guided Leitrim to success in the 1994 Connacht Senior Football Championship. Packie McGarty
Packy McGarty (29 April 1933 – 6 April 2021) was a Gaelic football player from Mohill, County Leitrim. He played for the Leitrim county team for 23 years between 1949 and 1971, playing his first senior game at the age of 16. He played in four Connacht Senior Football Championship finals with Leitrim, from 1957 to 1960. In 1958 they were narrowly beaten by a Galway team backboned by the players who would win three consecutive All-Ireland Senior Football Championship titles between 1963 and 1966. In this match he had his jersey torn to shreds by the Galway backs, and many spectators said his performance was one of the all-time great Gaelic football forward displays. He played on his first Connacht Railway Cup team at the age of 20 in 1954. He won his first Railway Cup with Connacht in 1957. Cathal Flynn
Cathal Flynn (1934 – 3 June 2021) was an Irish Gaelic footballer who played for club sides Gorvagh and Seán McDermotts and at inter-county level with the Leitrim senior football team. He usually lined out as a forward. Career Born in Gorvagh, County Leitrim, Flynn first came to Gaelic football prominence when he won a Leinster Colleges Championship title with the Franciscan College in Multyfarnham. His two seasons with the Leitrim minor team culminated with him being appointed team captain in 1952. Flynn also joined the Leitrim senior football team that year and began a 14-year senior career that saw him line out in five successive Connacht finals without winning. He was top scorer for the team for 10 years between 1956 and 1966, scoring 40 goals and 356 points. With the Seán McDermotts club in Dublin he won three successive league titles, while he was also selected for Connacht in the Railway Cup. Michael O'Hehir
Michael James Hehir (also known as Michael O'Hehir and ga, Mícheál Ó hEithir; 2 June 1920 – 24 November 1996) was an Irish hurling, football and horse racing commentator and journalist. Between 1938 and 1985 his enthusiasm and memorable turn of phrase endeared him to many. He is still regarded as the original 'voice of Gaelic games'. Early life O'Hehir was born in Glasnevin, Dublin to parents who had moved from Clare. His father, Jim O'Hehir, was active in Gaelic games, having trained his native county to win the 1914 All-Ireland title in hurling. He subsequently trained the Leitrim football team that secured the Connacht title in 1927 and he also served as an official with the Dublin Junior Board.
