Leaving The 20th Century
''Leaving the 20th Century'' is a recording of the Manic Millennium concert by the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers, released 2000. The concert, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the band, was performed on New Year's Eve 1999–2000 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, in front of more than 57,000 fans. The event became international as the final song of the event was broadcast live all over the world through satellites. The concert was released on VHS and DVD. It includes interview clips in which the band discuss their history and the songs, and an extra feature performance of "Ready for Drowning" and "If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next", recorded at Château de la Motte, France, in 1998. "La Tristesse Durera (Scream to a Sigh)" is a song by Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers. It was released in July 1993 by record label Columbia as the second single from their second studio album ''Gold Against the Soul''. It reached number 22 on the UK Singles Chart. Content and composition The song's title is taken from the reported last words of Vincent van Gogh, "La tristesse durera toujours", quoted in a letter from his younger brother Theo to their sister Elisabeth, using her nickname ''Lies''. The letter was translated by Robert Harrison, who states that the phrase means "The sadness will last forever". The song lyrics are written from the perspective of a war veteran, containing the line "wheeled out once a year, a cenotaph souvenir" and tracking the bathetic progress of the former soldier's war medal: "It sells at market stalls/Parades Milan catwalks". Released on 15 April 1996, the song peaked and debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart. Origins The title was inspired by the debut Joy Division EP, ''An Ideal for Living''. The opening line of the song 'Libraries gave us power' was inspired by a legend engraved over the entrance to the former library in Pillgwenlly, Newport, 15 miles from the band's home town of Blackwood in Wales: 'Knowledge is Power'. The next line, 'then work came and made us free', refers to the German slogan that featured above the gates of Nazi concentration camps and which had been used previously by the band in their song "The Intense Humming of Evil" on the album ''The Holy Bible''.
