Leaves From Satan's Book
''Leaves from Satan's Book'', also known as ''Leaves Out of the Book of Satan'' ( da, Blade af Satans bog), is a 1920 Danish fantasy film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer and starring Helge Nissen as Satan. This was only the third film directed by Dreyer, who later went on to create such classics as ''Vampyr'' (1932) and ''The Passion of Joan of Arc'' (1928). The film is structured much like D.W. Griffith's ''Intolerance (film), Intolerance'' (1916) with its episodic nature while evoking F. W. Murnau's ''Satan (1920 film), Satan'' (1920). The film ran 157 minutes, but sources list the DVD's running time at 121 minutes. Carl Theodor Dreyer
Carl Theodor Dreyer (; 3 February 1889 – 20 March 1968), commonly known as Carl Th. Dreyer, was a Danish film director and screenwriter. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his movies are noted for their emotional austerity and slow, stately pacing, frequent themes of social intolerance, the inseparability of fate and death, and the power of evil in earthly life. His 1928 movie '' The Passion of Joan of Arc'' is considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time, renowned for its cinematography and use of close-ups. It frequently appears on Sight & Sound's lists of the greatest films ever made, and in 2012's poll it was voted the 9th-best film ever made by film critics and 37th by film directors. Tenna Kraft
Hortensia (Tenna) Kristine Sofie Erogine Kraft née Frederiksen (1885–1954) was a Danish operatic soprano. One of the Royal Danish Theatre's outstanding sopranos in the early 20th century, she sang in operas by Wagner, Verdi, Puccini and Richard Strauss. She gained particular success in 1926 with the title role in Siegfried Salomon's Danish opera ''Leonora Christina'' which included the popular ''Der er tre hjørnestene''. Carlo Rossini Wieth (born Carl Andersen; 11 December 1885 – 30 June 1943) was a Danish stage and film actor whose career began at the turn of the 20th-century and lasted until his death in 1943. Early life and stage career Wieth was born as Carl Andersen in Copenhagen to Marius Hans Lindegaard Andersen, who was a judge, and his wife Jacobine Kirstine Wieth Andersen. He would begin his acting career after adding an "o" to his given name of Carl and taking his mother's maiden name. He was educated at the Royal Danish Theatre from 1903 to 1905 and made his stage debut in 1905. He was an actor at the Danish Royal Theatre from 1905 to 1907, 1908 to 1909 and again from 1923 to 1943. Clara Pontoppidan (23 April 1883 – 22 January 1975), also known as Clara Wieth, was a Danish actress. She worked mainly in Swedish and Danish silent films, including ''A Victim of the Mormons'' (Denmark, 1911). Viggo Lindstrøm (12 January 1858 – 17 June 1926) was a Danish actor and theatre director, founder of Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen. He was married to the actress Vera Lindstrøm. Biography Lindstrøm was born on 12 January 1858 in Copenhagen, the son of a Swedish tailor, and first apprenticed as a wine merchant before turning to acting. He had his debut on 3 December 1880 in Stavanger and was then affiliated to Dagmarteatret for many years from its opening, before he moved on to Folketeatret where he was expected to succeed J. F. S. Dorph-Petersen as theatre director. However, a fashionable controversy with Dorph-Petersen regarding his wife's notice from the theatre prompted him to resign. Viggo Elith William Pio (3 July 1887 – 10 February 1983) was a Danish actor of stage, screen, radio and television. He is most noted for starring roles in films such as Carl Theodor Dreyer's '' Leaves from Satan's Book'', Johan Jacobsen's '' Jenny and the Soldier'' and Benjamin Christensen's ''Häxan''. Theatre Elith Pio made his theatre debut in 1907 as a member of the Peter Fjelstrup's theater company. He worked in various theaters in Denmark until 1931, when he was employed by the Royal Danish Theatre. He remained a member of the Royal Theatre until his retirement in 1974.
