Leap Year (1924 Film)
''Leap Year'' is an American silent comedy film directed by and starring Roscoe Arbuckle. Though produced in 1921, the film was not released in the United States due to Arbuckle's involvement in the Virginia Rappe death scandal; it received its first release in Finland in 1924. The film finally saw an American release of sorts in 1981. Prints are held by the UCLA Film and Television Archive and Library of Congress. Plot summary Roscoe Arbuckle plays Stanley Piper, heir to his uncle’s millions. He lives at Piper Hall. His valet is Mumford. Inside the house, Jeremiah Piper, Stanley’s uncle, who is gouty, grouchy and a girl-hater, is being looked after by his nurse, Phyllis Brown. He decides to send Stanley on a fishing trip to keep him away from women as he falls in love with every woman he meets. Roscoe Arbuckle
Roscoe Conkling "Fatty" Arbuckle (; March 24, 1887 – June 29, 1933) was an American silent film actor, comedian, director, and screenwriter. He started at the Selig Polyscope Company and eventually moved to Keystone Studios, where he worked with Mabel Normand and Harold Lloyd as well as with his nephew, Al St. John. He also mentored Charlie Chaplin, Monty Banks and Bob Hope, and brought vaudeville star Buster Keaton into the movie business. Arbuckle was one of the most popular silent stars of the 1910s and one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood, signing a contract in 1920 with Paramount Pictures for $14,000 (). Arbuckle was the defendant in three widely publicized trials between November 1921 and April 1922 for the rape and manslaughter of actress Virginia Rappe. Harriet Hammond
Harriet Hammond (October 20, 1899 – September 23, 1991) was an American actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 40 films between 1918 and 1930. Hammond, who was appearing in prominent roles in the Mack Sennett comedy features, was born in Kansas but had lived in Los Angeles, since her early childhood and was a graduate of Los Angeles High Schools. When scarcely out of high school she conceived the idea of becoming a concert pianist. The strain of six hours a day practice, however, proved too severe, and her health broke down. Starting as one of the Sennett Bathing Beauties she simultaneously developed great power as a comedian, and the Sennett figure. Miss Hammond appeared in "Gee Whiz!" and "By Golly." She was a blond, had blue eyes and weighed a hundred and fifteen pounds. Miss Hammond was five feet seven inches high, and was a splendid athlete, excelling in water sports. Winifred Greenwood
Winifred Greenwood (January 1, 1885 – November 23, 1961) was an American silent film actress. Born in 1885 in Geneseo, New York, Greenwood studied to be a teacher but left New York Normal School to perform in vaudeville in the United States and Canada. Greenwood's career began in vaudeville, performing with the Kings Carnival Company in Canada and the United States. She went on to act with stock theater companies, one of which she headed. She was signed in 1910 and starred in over 200 films before her retirement in 1927. She starred in a number of films with Charlotte Burton including ''The Shriner's Daughter'' in 1913. She was married to actor George Field from 1913 to 1918. She died in 1961, age 76 in Woodland Hills, California. Maude Wayne
Maude Wayne (born Maude Wehn) was an American film actress who was active in Hollywood during the silent era. Biography Maude was born in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Louis Wehn and Maria McCathern. She was the youngest of the couple's children, and her brother Richard Wayne also became an actor. After starting as an extra in Triangle productions, she began appearing in Keystone films around 1917, often as one of Mack Sennett's bathing beauties. Following a few years spent in comedies, she later transitioned to heavier, vampier, more dramatic roles at Paramount, sometimes playing the leading lady to Rudolph Valentino. She retired from acting in the late 1920s before she married fellow actor Johnnie Walker.
