League Of Ireland
The League of Ireland ( ga, Sraith na hÉireann), together with the Football Association of Ireland, is one of the two main governing bodies responsible for organising association football in the Republic of Ireland. The term was originally used to refer to a single division league. However today the League of Ireland features five divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, U19 Division, U17 Division, U15 Division and starting U13 Division. The League of Ireland has always worked closely with the FAI and in 2006 the two bodies formally merged. All the divisions are currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result the league is also known as the SSE Airtricity League. The 1934–35 League of Ireland was the fourteenth season of the League of Ireland. Bohemians were the defending champions. Dolphin won their first title. Overview Cork Bohemians and Shelbourne were not re-elected to the League, while Waterford and Sligo Rovers were elected in their place. Waterford were re-elected after a two-year absence, while Sligo Rovers became the first team from Connacht to compete in the League. Alf Rigby
Alf Rigby was an Ireland international footballer. Rigby played for several clubs in the League of Ireland including Bray Unknowns, St James's Gate and Dundalk. He was also the top goalscorer in the League of Ireland for two successive seasons. Playing career St James's Gate In 1933–34 and 1934–35, while playing for St James's Gate, Rigby was the top scorer in the League of Ireland, scoring 13 and 17 goals respectively. On 17 March 1934 he also played for Gate in the FAI Cup final which Gate lost 2–1 to Cork. Rigby's goals helped Gate finish as runners–up in the 1934–35 League of Ireland season and then win the 1935–36 League of Ireland Shield. International career During the 1934–35 season Rigby played three times for Ireland. On 16 December 1934 he made his debut against Hungary in a 4–2 defeat at Dalymount Park. The 1932–33 League of Ireland was the twelfth season of the League of Ireland. Shamrock Rovers were the defending champions. Dundalk won their first title, becoming the first team from outside Dublin to do so. Overview Two teams were not re-elected to the League ( Brideville and Jacobs), while Waterford resigned voluntarily. Only one new team was elected ( Cork Bohemians), resulting in the League reducing in size from twelve teams to ten. Pearson Ferguson
Pearson Ferguson (1909–1985) was a Scottish professional footballer who played in the Scottish League for Ayr United, Queen of the South, Morton, Montrose and East Stirlingshire, for Cork in the Irish Free State League, and for Carlisle United in the English Football League. He played as an outside left. Life and career Ferguson was born in Coalburn, South Lanarkshire, the younger brother of Willie Ferguson, who went on to play for Chelsea and play for and manage Queen of the South. Like his brother, Pearson began his football career with Kello Rovers, the junior team local to the family home in Kirkconnel, Dumfries and Galloway. He moved on to Ayr United, and was playing for that club in the First Division in the 1929–30 season. He moved to Ireland in the 1931 close season to join Cork. Alex Hair
Alexander Hair (9 March 1898 – 31 May 1970) was a Scottish footballer who played as a centre forward. Career Born in Glasgow and nicknamed 'Sandy', he joined Partick Thistle in 1923 from local Junior club Strathclyde, where he had become a prolific goalscorer. By that time he was 25 years of age, relatively old to join a senior club; however, many sources record his birth date as 9 March 1902, and contemporary documents also show a younger age than he truly was, suggesting the player himself may have been aware of this inaccuracy. After loan spells in lower divisions at Queen of the South, Third Lanark, Alloa Athletic and Bo'ness he established himself with the ''Jags'', scoring 41 goals in 36 Scottish Football League appearances during the 1926–27 season (however, Jimmy McGrory of Celtic scored 48 to claim the top scorer award – neither Partick nor Celtic challenged for the league title), plus another five goals in a Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup final victory again ...
