Le Maréchal Ferrant
''Le maréchal ferrant'' (''The Blacksmith'') is a 1761 French two-act ''opéra comique'' with spoken dialogue and music composed by François-André Danican Philidor as well as several '' vaudevilles'' (popular old songs with new words), which were typically included in ''opéras comiques'' of the time. The libretto is by Antoine-François Quétant, after one of the stories in Boccaccio's ''Decameron'' ( VII, 1), with verses for the ''ariettes'' by Louis Anseaume and a plan devised by Serrière. Performance history The work was first performed by the Opéra-Comique at the Théâtre de la Foire St Laurent in Paris, on 22 August 1761, and was later performed by the same company at the Hôtel de Bourgogne on 10 February 1762 and for the royal court at Palace of Fontainebleau on 3 November 1762. Charles Simon Favart
Charles Simon Favart (13 November 1710 – 12 May 1792) was a French playwright and theatre director. The Salle Favart in Paris is named after him. Biography Born in Paris, the son of a pastry-cook, he was educated at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand, and after his father's death he carried on the business for a time. His first success in literature was ''La France delivrée par la Pucelle d'Orléans'', a poem about Joan of Arc which obtained a prize of the Académie des Jeux Floraux. After the production of his first ''vaudeville'', ''Les Deux Jumelles'' (1734), circumstances enabled him to relinquish business and devote himself entirely to the drama. French opera is one of Europe's most important operatic traditions, containing works by composers of the stature of Rameau, Berlioz, Gounod, Bizet, Massenet, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc and Messiaen. Nicole Wild (20 June 1929 – 29 December 2017) was a French musicologist, chief curator at the Paris Opera Library and Museum, and a specialist in the history and iconography of opera in France in the 19th century. Early life and education Born in Reims, Wild received her musical training at the (music theory, harmony, counterpoint, music history, music teaching certificate in 1953, first organ prize in 1955), where she taught music education in schools, technical college and music school from 1953 to 1962. For the organ, she also received instruction from André Marchal and completed internships at the Saint-Maximin Organ Academy.
