Lauren Young Casteel
Lauren Young Casteel (born 1953) is an African-American activist who advocates for social justice. She was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2014. The daughter of Margaret Buckner and Whitney M. Young, Jr., she was born Lauren Young in Nebraska and moved to Colorado when she was twenty. Casteel has been a leader of the Denver Foundation, the Hunt Alternatives Fund and the Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation. At the Denver Foundation, she instituted the Nonprofit Internship Program and the Nonprofit Inclusiveness Project; the second project received the Council on Foundations’ Critical Impact Award. Casteel was the first black woman to head a foundation in Colorado, the first female black TV personality in Colorado and the first female senior communications advisor to a Denver mayor. Colorado Women's Hall Of Fame
The Colorado Women's Hall of Fame is a non-profit, volunteer organization that recognizes women who have contributed to the history of the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2020, 170 women have been inducted. History There was a short-lived recognition program established in Colorado in 1965 to honor the contributions of women to the state, known as the Colorado Women of Achievement awards. Each year, three honorees from throughout the state who had distinguished themselves in their profession or avocation were recognized at an annual banquet held in Denver, given a cash award, and received a pin with the emblem of the program, which was sponsored by the Columbia Savings and Loan Association. The 1965 inductees, honored in 1966, included Verona Burkhard, Jo Eleanor Elliott and Sister Frances Marie Walsh. Margaret Buckner Young
Margaret Buckner Young (March 29, 1921 – December 5, 2009) was an American educator and author. Biography The daughter of Eva Carter and Frank Buckner, she was born Margaret Buckner in Campbellsville, Kentucky and was educated in Aurora, Illinois and at Kentucky State Industrial College, receiving a bachelor's degree in English and French. In 1944, she married Whitney M. Young, Jr. Young continued her education, receiving a master's degree in educational psychology from the University of Minnesota. In 1953, the couple moved to Atlanta where she taught educational psychology at Spelman College. In 1961, they moved to New Rochelle, New York, where she mainly concentrated on raising their two daughters; she also began her writing career. After her husband's death in 1971, Young became involved in promoting racial equality and in improving relations between the United States and other countries including Nigeria, Yugoslavia and China. Temple Hoyne Buell
Temple Hoyne Buell (September 9, 1895 – January 5, 1990) was an American architect, real estate developer and entrepreneur namesake of the Buell Theatre in Denver Center Complex, Buell & Company, and the Temple Buell Foundation. Buell was born to a prominent Chicago family and the great-grandson of Thomas Hoyne. After graduating from Lake Forest Academy, he studied architecture at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and completed graduate studies at Columbia University. He served in France during World War I. In the battle of Château-Thierry, he was exposed to phosgene. In 1921, he moved to Denver, Colorado for treatment of tuberculosis. After he regained his health he established the largest architectural firm in the Rocky Mountain area. Casteel lives and works in New York City. Early life and education Casteel was born in Denver, Colorado in 1989 to Lauren Young Casteel and Charles Casteel.
