George Braith
George Braith (born George Timothy Braithwaite on June 26, 1939) is a soul-jazz saxophonist from New York. Career Braith is known for playing multiple horns at once, a technique pioneered by Roland Kirk. Braith is credited with the invention of the Braithophone, two different horns (straight alto and soprano) mended together by extensions, valves and connections. Braith is featured in a mosaic in the 72nd street station of the Second Avenue Subway in the New York City Subway system. Of Braith's album ''Musart'' Thom Jurek at AllMusic wrote, "Musart is his masterpiece; it is one of the most diverse yet refined albums to come out of the '60s, and has few peers even today." John Patton (musician)
John Patton (July 12, 1935 – March 19, 2002) was an American jazz, blues and R&B pianist and organist often known by his nickname, Big John Patton. Patton was one of the most in-demand organists during the golden era of the Hammond B-3 organs between 1963 and 1970. He recorded extensively for Blue Note and performed or collaborated with Lloyd Price, Grant Green, and Lou Donaldson. Patton had a lower profile in the 1970s but enjoyed a comeback in the 1980s and 1990s, often in collaboration with saxophonist John Zorn. His later music incorporated modal and free jazz. Ben Dixon (born 25 December 1934 in Gaffney, South Carolina; died 8 November 2018) was an American jazz drummer. Dixon is best known for his contributions to many soul jazz albums on the Blue Note label led by Grant Green, Lou Donaldson and Big John Patton. He died in 2018. Victor Sproles
Victor Sproles (November 18, 1927 in Chicago – May 13, 2005) was an American jazz bassist. Sproles worked in the 1950s with Red Rodney and Ira Sullivan and appears on the Sun Ra recordings '' Super-Sonic Jazz'', '' Sound of Joy'' and '' Deep Purple''. In 1957 he appeared on the Verve recording ''Stan Meets Chet'' with Stan Getz and Chet Baker. In 1960 he joined Johnny Griffin's Big Soul Band and in 1961 played in Muhal Richard Abrams' Experimental Band. In 1964 he joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, recording the album SMake It'' for Limelight; Lee Morgan and his old Sun Ra bandmate John Gilmore were in the group. He recorded two more albums with the Messengers after Gilmore left. He subsequently appeared Lee Morgan's Blue Note albums '' The Rumproller'' and ''The Sixth Sense''. Grant Green
Grant Green (June 6, 1935 – January 31, 1979) was an American jazz guitarist and composer. Recording prolifically for Blue Note Records as both leader and sideman, Green performed in the hard bop, soul jazz, bebop, and Latin-tinged idioms throughout his career. Critics Michael Erlewine and Ron Wynn write, "A severely underrated player during his lifetime, Grant Green is one of the great unsung heroes of jazz guitar ... Green's playing is immediately recognizable – perhaps more than any other guitarist." Critic Dave Hunter described his sound as "lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy". He often performed in an organ trio, a small group featuring a Hammond organ and drummer. The Van Gelder Studio is a recording studio at 445 Sylvan Avenue, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, United States. Following the use of his parents' home at 25 Prospect Avenue, Hackensack, New Jersey, for the original studio, Rudy Van Gelder (1924–2016) moved to the new location for his recording studio in July 1959. It has been used to record many albums released by jazz labels such as Blue Note, Prestige, Impulse!, Verve and CTI. Musart is an album by American saxophonist George Braith, his second and final effort for Prestige Records. It was recorded in 1966 and 1967, and released in mid 1967 as PRLP 7515. The pieces In the original liner notes, Braith describes the album as "a concert in miniature. Each tune was selected to relay a message of love, peace and tranquility." "Our Blessings" was inspired by Braith's brother, while "Evelyn Anita" was named after his sister, Evelyn, and came to Braith's mind when he stopped to play "somewhere in the Southwest", on his way to Los Angeles. "Musart" and "Splashes of Love" were inspired by "beautiful sights as I crossed the United States."
