Lauberhorn (downhill Ski Course)
Lauberhorn is the longest World Cup downhill ski course in the world on the same name mountain in Wengen, Switzerland, debuted in 1930. Course is the oldest active downhill course in the world and part of the Lauberhornrennen, the oldest ski competition in the world. As Switzerland is and always was military neutral, downhill competitions were held even during World War II. Karl Molitor
Karl Molitor (29 June 1920 – 25 August 2014) was a Swiss alpine skier who competed in the 1948 Winter Olympics. Born in Wengen, he married Antoinette Meyer (who also competed in the 1948 Winter Olympics). In 1948 he won a silver medal in the Alpine combined event and a bronze medal in the downhill competition. In the slalom contest he finished eighth. Karl Molitor also won a very prestigious world renowned race many times which is called the Lauberhorn ski races with winners such as Bode Miller. He won the downhill ski race in 1939, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1945 and 1947. He won the slalom ski race in 1940 and 1948 and won the combined in 1940, 1946 and 1948. Franz Zingerle
Franz Zingerle (11 December 1908 – 12 June 1988) was the Austrian alpine skier and world champion. Zingerle became a world downhill champion in 1935. Biography He comes from a poor farmers family as the oldest son from a total of eight kids. Already during his childhood he developed a love for skiing. As a teenager, he first worked as a laborer until he learned to be a bricklayer. At the age of 17, he bought skis for the first time and joined the Axams, ski club which held the first ski races on the Birgitzer Alm. Shortly after he joined the club, he became the club's first club champion in 1926. Moreover, 1926 is considered as the beginning year of his successful career. Émile Allais (25 February 1912 – 17 October 2012) was a champion alpine ski racer from France; he won all three events at the 1937 world championships in Chamonix and the gold in the combined in 1938. Born in Megève, he was a dominant racer in the late 1930s and is considered to have been the first great French alpine skier. Allais won the bronze medal in the combined (downhill and slalom), the only alpine medal event at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch, Germany. These Olympics were the first to award medals in alpine skiing. The previous year, he had won the silver medal in the downhill and combined at the 1935 world championships.
