Gillingham, Dorset
Gillingham ( ) is a town and civil parish in the Blackmore Vale area of Dorset, England. It lies on the B3095 and B3081 roads, approximately south of the A303 road, A303 trunk road and northwest of Shaftesbury. It is the most northerly town in the county. In the 2011 United Kingdom census, 2011 census the civil parish had a population of 11,756. The neighbouring hamlets of Peacemarsh, Bay and Wyke have become part of Gillingham as it has expanded. Gillingham is pronounced with a hard initial "g" (), unlike Gillingham, Kent, which is pronounced with a soft "g" (). Langham House Close on Ham Common in Ham in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames is a development of three Grade II* listed buildings designed in 1955 by the British architects James Gowan and James Stirling. The Le Corbusier-influenced buildings were the architects' first major project working together and cemented their reputation as leaders amongst the Brutalist movement. The development was constructed during 1957–58 for Manousso Group. Location Langham House Close is a cul-de-sac off Ham Street, Ham Common, London located to the north of the Cassel Hospital and behind ''Langham House'', both Grade II listed. Location Langham House is located on Ham Street, on the west side of Ham Common in Ham, London. It is adjacent and to the north of the Grade II-listed Cassel Hospital. Description Langham House is a three-storey house with cellar, built of stock brick, five sash windows wide. It has stucco corbel cornice below the parapet and a Doric porch. It has a single-storey and one window wide wing to the right which has a side door with a rusticated stone surround and pediment. Rode, Somerset
Rode (formerly Road) is a village and civil parish in the ceremonial counties of England, ceremonial county of Somerset in England, northeast of Frome and southwest of Trowbridge. The small settlement of Rode Hill, northeast of Rode village, is now contiguous with it. The village lies within a mile of the Wiltshire border and is the easternmost settlement in Somerset. The Wiltshire village of Southwick, Wiltshire, Southwick is 2 miles (3 km) to the northeast. History The village appears as "Rode" in the Domesday Book, but the spelling was labile from an early date: it is "Roda" in assize rolls of 1201, "la Rode" in a charter roll of 1230; by the 18th century "Road" was regarded as the usual form. This was reverted to the older spelling "Rode" by Somerset County Council in 1919. The name derives from the Anglo-Saxon ''rod'', meaning a clearing.
