Al Laney
Albert Gillis Laney (January 11, 1896 – January 31, 1988) was an American sportswriter who specialized in tennis and golf but also covered baseball, boxing and American football. Biography Laney was born on January 11, 1896 in Pensacola, Florida, the son of an attorney and one of six children. He served as a lieutenant in World War I and saw action at Meuse-Argonne Offensive, The Battle of the Argonne Forest. After World War I, Laney became a correspondent at the New York Evening Mail. In 1924 he went to Europe and joined the Paris Herald, as the European edition of the New York Herald was known. During his period in Europe he also started working for the ''New York Herald Tribune''. In the summer months he would travel between Paris and England to cover the Wimbledon Championships, Wimbledon tennis tournament, the Davis Cup and the British golf tournaments. Emma May Laney (November 27, 1886 – March 26, 1969) was an American college professor who taught English at Agnes Scott College in Georgia for 37 years, and friend of poet Robert Frost. Early life and education Emma May Laney was born in Shannon, Mississippi, the daughter of William Ervyn Laney and Elizabeth Harkey Laney. Her father died when she was a little girl. She graduated from the Mississippi Industrial Institute & College in 1905, where her classmates included librarian Nannie Herndon Rice, physician Mary Maxwell Hathorn, and home economist Connie J. Bonslagel, and her English professor was Pauline Van de Graaf Orr. Lucy Craft Laney
Lucy Craft Laney (April 13, 1854 – October 23, 1933) was an American educator who in 1883 founded the first school for black children in Augusta, Georgia. She was principal for 50 years of the Haines Institute for Industrial and Normal Education. In 1974, Laney was posthumously selected by Governor Jimmy Carter as one of the first three African Americans honored by having their portraits installed in the Georgia State Capitol. She also was inducted into the Georgia Women of Achievement. ''The Acolyte'' was a science fiction fanzine edited by Francis Towner Laney from 1942-1946 (a total of 14 issues), dedicated to articles about fantasy fiction, with particular emphasis on H. P. Lovecraft and his circle. (Laney's essay, "The Cthulhu Mythology: A Glossary", initially published in the Winter 1942 issue, was expanded at the request of August Derleth and became part of the 1943 Arkham House Lovecraft anthology ''Beyond the Wall of Sleep''.) Later issues were co-edited and published by Samuel D. Russell. Contributors included Clark Ashton Smith and Donald Wandrei. The first two issues were hectographed, the remainder were mimeographed. Benjamin Lany (or Laney; 1 January 1591 – 24 January 1675) was an English academic and bishop. Early life The son of John Laney, Benjamin Lany was born in Ipswich. He entered Christ's College, Cambridge in 1608, graduating B.A. 1612, M.A. 1615, B.D. 1622, D.D. 1630. He became a Fellow of Pembroke Hall, Cambridge in 1616. Career (pre Civil War) He was ordained on 21 February 1619. After a curacy at Madingley he held livings at Hambledon, Hampshire, Bishops Waltham and Buriton. He was also Chaplain to the Bishop of Winchester from 1628. He became Master of Pembroke in 1630.
