Lance Dickson
Lance Michael Dickson (born October 19, 1969) is an American former professional baseball player who was a pitcher for the Chicago Cubs of Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1990. He threw left-handed and batted right-handed. Amateur career Dickson was born in Fullerton, California, and graduated from Grossmont High School in El Cajon in 1987. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 37th round (953rd overall) of the 1987 MLB Draft. Dickson did not sign with the team, opting to go to college and try to improve his draft prospects. He attended the University of Arizona, and in 1989 he played collegiate summer baseball with the Orleans Cardinals of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where he was named the most valuable pitcher of the league's All-Star Game. He was selected in the first round of the 1990 MLB Draft (23rd overall) by the Chicago Cubs, and signed with them seven days later. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. 1990 MLB Draft
The 1990 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft was held in June 1990. The draft placed amateur baseball players onto major league teams. 1,487 players were distributed to 26 teams. The draft consisted of first round selections, supplemental first round selections, compensation picks, and many more rounds, in fact, it went a record 101 rounds with 40 first round selections. Breaking Ball
In baseball, a breaking ball is a pitch that does not travel straight as it approaches the batter; it will have sideways or downward motion on it, sometimes both (see slider). A breaking ball is not a specific pitch by that name, but is any pitch that "breaks", such as a curveball, slider, or screwball. A pitcher who primarily uses breaking ball pitches is often referred to as a junkballer. A breaking ball is more difficult than a straight pitch for a catcher to receive as breaking pitches sometimes hit the ground (whether intentionally, or not) before making it to the plate. A curveball moves down and to the left for a right handed pitcher. For a left hand pitcher, it moves down and to the right. And blocking a breaking ball requires thought and preparation by the catcher.
