In most of western Eurasia, they are the predominant members of this family and includes the European common glow-worm, which is the type species. Lampyris Noctiluca
''Lampyris noctiluca'', the common glow-worm of Europe (see also "glowworm"), is the type species of beetle in the genus ''Lampyris'' and the family Lampyridae. ''Lampyris noctiluca'' presents a conspicuous sexual dimorphism. The males are winged, with brown elytra, a clearer pronotum and a large brown spot in the middle, while females are larviforme, wings are missing and they are often twice the size of the males (up to in length). These beetles use their bioluminescence to attract mates. The adult females are mostly famed for their glow, although all stages of their life cycle are capable of glowing. In Britain, this species is fairly common compared to its cousin '' Phosphaenus hemipterus'' – the lesser glow worm – which is very rare. Distribution The range of this beetle stretches from Portugal and Ireland in the west, right across Europe, Africa and Asia to China in the east. It also survives further north than any other firefly, almost reaching the Arctic Circle. I ...

Lampyris Raymondi
''Lampyris raymondi'' is a firefly species of the genus ''Lampyris'', belonging to the order Coleoptera. Description ''Lampyris raymondi'' can reach an adult size of about . This insect presents a conspicuous sexual dimorphism. The females generally are longer than males (up to 25mm in length). They are larviform, do not have wings and produce a continuous glow ("glowworms"). They use their bioluminescence to attract mates. The males are winged, elytra are brown, with a yellow border on the elytral suture. Pronotum is slightly more elongated. The abdomen is yellowish, with a very convex last dorsal segment. The body of the larvae is composed by 12 bright black segments. It shows two whitish or pale pink spots at the rear edge of each segment, with four spots on the first segment (corresponding to the pronotum). It can be easily distinguished from ''Lampyris noctiluca'', that has just two spots on the first segment. In spring these predatory larvae can often be seen on paths in d ...

Cantharis
''Cantharis'' is a large genus of soldier beetles in the family Cantharidae with narrow and soft elytra. The poisonous Spanish fly is superficially similar and is associated with the scientific name ''Cantharis vesicatoria''. It is also sometimes called "cantharis" in the vernacular, but it is actually unrelated to ''Cantharis'' and is not a member of the Cantharidae at all. It was classified there erroneously until Johan Christian Fabricius corrected its name in his ''Systema entomologiae'' in 1775. He reclassified the Spanish fly in the new genus ''Lytta'' as ''Lytta vesicatoria''. It belongs to the family Meloidae.Selander, R. B.
