It was cleared by the Temple family, as a result of enclosures, after 1739, to improve the amenity value of their new park at Stowe. The hamlet's name is Old English, meaning ''long town''. History Lamport consisted of two ancient manors, one of which was owned by the priory of Oseney and passed to Stowe; the other seems to have belonged to Luffield Abbey, whose estate had passed, by 1350, to a family named after the hamlet, and subsequently passed by marriage, in 1416, to the Dayrells (whose name continues in the village name of Lillingstone Dayrell). 	Lamport, Northamptonshire Lamport is a village and civil parish in West Northamptonshire, England. The village is on the A508, about south of Market Harborough and north of Northampton. Nearby is Lamport Hall. At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 207 people, including Hanging Houghton and increasing to 225 at the 2011 Census. The name of the village means 'Long town'. Between 1859 and 1960, the village was served by Lamport railway station just north of the village running trains south to Northampton and north to Market Harborough. This is now part of the heritage Northampton & Lamport Railway, but as of 2018 the tracks have not yet been rebuilt as far as Lamport. The parish Church of All Saints is a Grade I listed building. It has a medieval tower but the remainder was built in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The 19th century part is the south vestry, designed by G.F. Bodley. The Hall contains an outstanding collection of books, paintings and furniture. The building includes The High Room with a magnificent ceiling by William Smith. It also has a library with 16th-century volumes and an early 19th-century cabinet room with Neapolitan cabinets which depict mythological paintings on glass. It is open to the public. Lamport Hall was the home of the Isham family from 1560 to 1976. 	Lamport Railway Station Lamport railway station on the Northampton and Market Harborough railway opened on 16 February 1859 serving the villages of Lamport, Maidwell, Hanging Houghton as well as Lamport Hall, Northamptonshire, England. It ran half a mile (ca.800 m) west of the village towards Maidwell just north of the road which was crossed by a level crossing. It was part of the London and North Western Railway. The next station north, Kelmarsh is located just north of Kelmarsh Tunnel. The station lost its passenger service on 4 January 1960. The line was re-opened for limited periods after that and not closed completely until 15 August 1981.
