Lake Mackay, known as Wilkinkarra to the Indigenous Pintupi people, is the largest of hundreds of ephemeral salt lakes scattered throughout the Pilbara and northern parts of the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. It is located within the Great Sandy Desert. The lake is the largest in Western Australia and has a surface area of . Its elevation ranges between and above mean sea-level. Description Lake Mackay is the fourth largest lake in Australia. It measures approximately east-west and north-south. The darker areas of the lakebed are indicative of some form of desert vegetation or algae, some moisture within the soils of the dry lake, and the lowest elevations where pooling of water occurs. In this arid environment, salts and other minerals are carried to the surface through capillary action caused by evaporation, thereby producing the white reflective surface. The Lake Mackay hare-wallaby (''Lagorchestes asomatus''), also known as the central hare-wallaby or kuluwarri, is an extinct species of macropod formerly found in central Australia. Very little is known about it. Family The Lake Mackay hare-wallaby belongs to the family Macropodidae, the largest in the order Diprodontia. Along with possums, gliders, potoroos, and kangaroos, the Lake Mackay hare-wallaby belongs to the suborder Phalangerida. The suborder Vombatiformes consist of koalas and wombats. The Lake Mackay hare-wallaby's subfamily, Macropodinae, comprises 61 species from 10 genera. Macropodidae's other suborder, Sthenurinae, may have included about 20 species during the Pleistocene period according to fossil record. History The Lake Mackay hare-wallaby is known only from a single animal collected by explorer/geologist Michael Terry in 1932 between Mount Farewell and the northern end of Lake Mackay in the Northern Territory. __NOTOC__ Lake Mackay is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located on the territory’s south-west adjoining the border with the state of Western Australia about south of the territory capital of Darwin and about west of the municipal seat in Alice Springs. The locality consists of the following land (from north to south): the Lake Mackay Aboriginal Land Trust, the Mount Doreen Station pastoral property, the former Newhaven Station pastoral property and the western part of the Haasts Bluff Aboriginal Land Trust. It fully surrounds the localities of Kintore and Nyirripi. The Tanami Road passes through the locality from Yuendumu in the south to the north-west via Mount Dooreen Station on its way to Halls Creek. The locality’s boundaries and name were gazetted on 4 April 2007.
