Laia Cañigueral
Laia Cañigueral i Olivé (born 11 March 1981) is a Spanish sociologist and politician from Catalonia who served as Member of the Congress of Deputies of Spain. Early life Cañigueral was born on 11 March 1981 in Cassà de la Selva, Catalonia. She has a bachelor's degree in sociology and a post-graduate degree in citizen participation and sustainable development from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Career Cañigueral is a sociologist, specialising in citizen participation, sustainable development and local government. She has worked at the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation, the Catalan Youth Agency (Agència Catalana de la Joventut) and the Catalan Women's Institute (Institut Català de la Dona). Cañigueral joined the Young Republican Left of Catalonia (Joventuts d'Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya) in 1999. She was the JERC's national secretary for International Relations. The Congress of Deputies ( es, link=no, Congreso de los Diputados, italic=unset) is the lower house of the Cortes Generales, Spain's legislative branch. The Congress meets in the Palace of the Parliament () in Madrid. It has 350 members elected by constituencies (matching fifty Spanish provinces and two autonomous cities) by closed list proportional representation using the D'Hondt method. Deputies serve four-year terms. The presiding officer is the President of the Congress of Deputies, who is elected by the members thereof. It is the analogue to a speaker. In the Congress, MPs from the political parties, or groups of parties, form parliamentary groups. 2007 Spanish Local Elections
The 2007 Spanish local elections were held on Sunday, 27 May 2007, to elect all 66,131 councillors in the 8,111 municipalities of Spain and all 1,038 seats in 38 provincial deputations. The elections were held simultaneously with regional elections in thirteen autonomous communities, as well as local elections in the three foral deputations of the Basque Country and the eleven island councils in the Balearic and Canary Islands. The results saw few changes overall; most incumbent governments retained their majority, with only a few exceptions. The PP government in the Balearics fell, and a coalition led by PSOE took power. While the elections were seen as a first indication of how the 2008 Spanish general election might turn out, the results proved to be inconclusive. 2004 Spanish General Election
The 2004 Spanish general election was held on Sunday, 14 March 2004, to elect the 8th Cortes Generales of the Kingdom of Spain. All 350 seats in the Congress of Deputies were up for election, as well as 208 of 259 seats in the Senate. The electoral outcome was heavily influenced by the aftermath of the Madrid train bombings on 11 March, as a result of which all parties suspended their electoral campaigns. For two days following the attacks, the People's Party (PP) government kept blaming the terrorist organization ETA for the bombings, even in spite of mounting evidence suggesting the involvement of Islamist groups.
