''Ladies of the Evening'' is a play in four acts by Milton Herbert Gropper. It premiered on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre on December 23, 1924. It closed in May 1925 after 159 performances. The production was produced and directed by David Belasco. It starred James Kirkwood as the painter Jerry Strong, Beth Merrill as Kay Beatty, Edna Hibbard as Dot Miller, H. Dudley Hawley as Calvin King, Kay Strozzi as Claire Standish, Vernon Steele as Tom Standish, and Robert O'Connor as Frank Forbes. Lyceum Theatre (Broadway)
The Lyceum Theatre ( ) is a Broadway theater at 149 West 45th Street, between Seventh Avenue and Sixth Avenue, in the Theater District of Midtown Manhattan in New York City. Opened in 1903, the Lyceum Theatre is one of the oldest surviving Broadway venues, as well as the oldest continuously operating legitimate theater in New York City. The theater was designed by Herts & Tallant in the Beaux-Arts style and was built for impresario Daniel Frohman. It has 922 seats across three levels and is operated by The Shubert Organization. The facade became a New York City designated landmark in 1974, and the lobby and auditorium interiors were similarly designated in 1987. The theater maintains most of its original Beaux-Arts design. He was the first writer to adapt the short story ''Madame Butterfly'' for the stage. Edna Louise Hibbard (May 12, 1894 – December 26, 1942) was a stage and motion picture actress from Detroit, Michigan. She had a sharp tongue and was known for her roles in comedy. Theatrical prominence She made her stage debut in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1907 as the child in ''The Kreutzer Sonata''. Hibbard trained with the Poli Stock Company in Hartford, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C. Soon she performed in ''Officer 666'', ''Ready Money'', and ''Stop Thief''. Robert O'Connor, also known professionally as Robert Emmett O'Connor and Robert E. O'Connor (March 18, 1885 – September 4, 1962) was an Irish-American actor. He had a lengthy career as a stage actor on Broadway and in vaudeville from 1905-1931; using the stage name Robert O'Connor in both musicals and plays. Barbara Stanwyck (; born Ruby Catherine Stevens; July 16, 1907 – January 20, 1990) was an American actress, model and dancer. A stage, film, and television star, during her 60-year professional career she was known for her strong, realistic screen presence and versatility. She was a favorite of directors, including Cecil B.
