Raymond Cannon (actor)
Raymond Cannon (born Ulises Tildmann Cannon; September 1, 1892 – June 7, 1977) was an American actor, film director, screenwriter, journalist, and author known for his work with D. W. Griffith and Buster Keaton. Background Ulises Tillman Cannon was born September 1, 1892 in Long Hollow, Tennessee to Newton Cannon and Sarah Lincoln Bolinger. In 1910 he was working at a soda fountain in Knoxville, but after leaving divinity school, he moved west, performing in vaudeville and working as a journalist in Dallas and Fort Worth. In April 1918, Cannon became a journalist for Elmer M. Robbins' weekly magazine ''Camera! The Digest of the Motion Picture Industry''. E.M. Robbins died in 1920 and Cannon bought the magazine in 1921, co-publishing it with Lola B Robbins until he sold his interest in 1922. Harry Oakes Stubbs (December 7, 1874 – May 9, 1950) was an English-born American character actor, who appeared both on Broadway and in films. He was born on December 7, 1874 in Southampton, Hampshire, England. Stubbs immigrated from England at the age of 16, and made his first Broadway appearance at the age of 31 in ''The Bad Samaritan'', which had a short run of fifteen performances in September 1905 at the Garden Theatre. The Internet Broadway Database (IBDB) has him appearing in only eight plays over the next 23 years, the last of which was 1928's ''The Big Fight'' which had a month run at the Majestic Theatre in September/October 1928. In 1929, he would move to Hollywood and begin his film career, which spanned the first fifteen years of the sound era of the industry; he would appear in over 50 films during that time. The genre is one of the oldest in American cinema; some of the first silent movies were comedies, as slapstick comedy often relies on visual depictions, without requiring sound. Shirley Palmer (December 25, 1908 – March 29, 2000) was an American film actress of the 1920s and 1930s, with most of her career being in the silent film era. Born on Christmas Day in Chicago, Illinois, Palmer started her career as a film actress in 1926, starring opposite Oliver Hardy in ''A Bankrupt Honeymoon''. She starred in four films in 1926, and opened 1927 starring in ''Burning Gold'' opposite Herbert Rawlinson. She starred in five films in 1927, the best known of which was ''The Magic Flame'', starring Ronald Colman. 1928 was by far be her biggest year, with her appearing in seven films, including '' Prowlers of the Sea'' starring Carmel Myers and Ricardo Cortez, and '' Marriage by Contract'' starring Patsy Ruth Miller. John Holland (actor, 1899–1971)
John Holland (June 11, 1899 – September 2, 1971) was an American actor who started his career as the male lead in two 1927 silents, ''Rich But Honest'' and ''The Secret Studio'', but the advent of sound brought him a mix of occasional male leads, second leads and parts further down the cast list. Biography John Holland was born James B. Holland in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He began acting in Hollywood films in 1926, billed as Clifford Holland in his earliest appearances. He later ascribed this to a casting director confusing him with his cousin, civil engineer Clifford Milburn Holland. He was best known for roles in the Pre-Code dramas '' Hell Harbor'' and ''She Goes to War''. Holland was 33 years old at the time of his final film performance in a 10th-billed supporting role in 1932's '' The Silver Lining''. He died in Laguna Beach, California in 1971 at the age of 72. Harry Cohn
Harry Cohn (July 23, 1891 – February 27, 1958) was a co-founder, president, and production director of Columbia Pictures Corporation. Life and career Cohn was born to a working-class Jewish family in New York City. His father, Joseph Cohn, was a tailor from Germany, and his mother, Bella Joseph, was from Pale of Settlement, Russian Empire. He left school early and had a variety of jobs, including chorus boy, fur salesman, pool hustler, shipping clerk, streetcar conductor and song plugger for a sheet music printer. He also appeared in a vaudeville act with Harry Ruby. He entered the film industry when he got a job with Independent Moving Pictures (which had recently merged to become part of Universal Film Manufacturing Company), where his elder brother, Jack Cohn, was already employed. Pre-Code Hollywood was the brief era in the American film industry between the widespread adoption of sound in film in 1929LaSalle (2002), p. 1. and the enforcement of the Motion Picture Production Code censorship guidelines, popularly known as the "Hays Code", in mid-1934. Although the Code was adopted in 1930, oversight was poor, and it did not become rigorously enforced until July 1, 1934, with the establishment of the Production Code Administration (PCA). Before that date, film content was restricted more by local laws, negotiations between the Studio Relations Committee (SRC) and the major studios, and popular opinion, than by strict adherence to the Hays Code, which was often ignored by Hollywood filmmakers.
