''La Maleta'' ( en, The Suitcase) is a 1963 Chilean experimental drama short film written and directed by Raúl Ruiz based on the Chilean play of the same name that originally premiered at the Petit Rex Theater in 1962 by theater director Víctor Jara. It was Ruiz's first film as a director and was produced, repurposed and distributed through the Experimental Cinema program of the University of Chile. Plot The story revolves around a man who is traveling with a large suitcase on his back. Inside the suitcase, a smaller man is discovered who shares similar physical traits with the owner of the suitcase. As a result, the owner becomes physically exhausted from carrying the heavy suitcase, but the man inside helps relieve him of the burden. Raúl Ruiz (director)
Raúl Ernesto Ruiz Pino (french: Raoul Ruiz; 25 July 1941 – 19 August 2011) was an experimental Chilean filmmaker, writer and teacher whose work is best known in France. He directed more than 100 films. Biography The son of a ship's captain and a schoolteacher in southern Chile, Raúl Ruiz abandoned his university studies in theology and law to write 100 plays with the support of a Rockefeller Foundation grant. He went on to learn his craft working in Chilean and Mexican television and studying at film school in Argentina (1964). Back in Chile, he made his feature debut ''Three Sad Tigers'' (1968), sharing the Golden Leopard at the 1969 Locarno Film Festival. According to Ruiz in a 1991 interview, ''Three Sad Tigers'' "is a film without a story, it is the reverse of a story. Somebody kills somebody. Valdivia Film Festival
The Valdivia International Film Festival (Spanish: Festival Internacional de Cine de Valdivia (FICV o FICVALDIVIA)) is an international film exhibition and competition, held annually in the city of Valdivia, Los Rios region, Chile. The festival begun in 1993 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cine Club of the Universidad Austral de Chile. A competition was included the following year, labeled as "Valdivia Cine & Video". That event became a milestone to cultural activity in southern Chile, promising at that time to become the greatest film event in the country. The early versions of the festival were oriented to ecological issues. From that point the characteristic trophy award emerged: the Pudú (The Pudú is a small kind of deer, typical of southern Chile). Jorge Arriagada (born 1943) is a Chilean film composer. He is perhaps best known for his long-term collaboration with director Raúl Ruiz (director), Raúl Ruiz. He has also worked with directors Patricio Guzman, Barbet Schroeder and Olivier Assayas. Biography Jorge Arriagada was born on August 20, 1943 in Santiago, Chile, Santiago. He studied composition and orchestral conduction at the National Conservatory of Music in Santiago. He then obtained a scholarship from the French government that enabled him to study expressionism with Max Deutsch, who was Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg's friend and student.
