La Cathédrale Engloutie
"La cathédrale engloutie" (The Sunken Cathedral) is a prelude written by the French composer Claude Debussy for solo piano. It was published in 1910 as the tenth prelude in Debussy's first of two volumes of twelve piano preludes each. It is characteristic of Debussy in its form, harmony, and content. Musical impressionism This prelude is an example of Debussy's musical impressionism in that it is a musical depiction of, or allusion to, an image or idea. Debussy quite often named his pieces in accordance with the image that he intended to evoke, such as in the case of '' La Mer'', "Des pas sur la neige", or " Jardins sous la pluie". Ivan Ilić (pianist)
Ivan Ilić ( sr-Cyrl, Иван Илић; born August 14, 1978) is a Serbian- American pianist. He lives in Paris. Early life Ilić was born in Palo Alto, in the United States. He attended the University of California, Berkeley in the U.S. where he took degrees in mathematics and music. Ilić also briefly studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music before pursuing graduate studies at the Conservatoire de Paris, earning a ''Premier Prix'', and finally at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. His teachers in France included François-René Duchâble, Christian Ivaldi, and Jacques Rouvier. Career Ilić performs primarily as a soloist. His recording of Debussy's 24 '' Préludes'' was released in October 2008 on the French record label Paraty and won Mezzo TV's Critics' Choice Award in France. Voiles
Voiles is a composition by Claude Debussy for solo piano from 1909. It is the second piece in a set of twelve préludes published in 1910. The title may be translated as either ''veils'' or ''sails''; both meanings can be connected to the musical structure (see below). Except for some mild, localized chromaticism and a short pentatonic passage, the entire piece uses the whole-tone scale.. In their published form, the ''Préludes'' have their individual titles printed not at the start, but at the end—and in parentheses. Musical analysis The composition studies the whole-tone scale intensively, with the exception of a brief six-measure section in the pentatonic scale. The structure of the piece follows a ternary (A–B–A') form. A begins in m. 1; B begins in m. 42; and A' begins in m. 48. Colin Matthews
Colin Matthews, OBE (born 13 February 1946) is an English composer of contemporary classical music. Noted for his large-scale orchestral compositions, Matthews is also a prolific arranger of other composer's music, including works by Berlioz, Britten, Dowland, Mahler, Purcell and Schubert. Other arrangements include orchestrations of all Debussy's 24 Préludes, both books of Debussy's ''Images'', and two movements—''Oiseaux tristes'' and ''La vallée des cloches''—from Ravel's ''Miroirs''. Having received a doctorate from University of Sussex on the works of Mahler, from 1964–1975 Matthews worked with his brother David Matthews and musicologist Deryck Cooke on completing a performance version of Mahler's Tenth Symphony. Henri Büsser
Paul Henri Büsser (16 January 1872 – 30 December 1973) was a French classical composer, organist, and conductor. Biography Büsser was born in Toulouse of partly German ancestry. He entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1889, where he studied organ with César Franck and composition with Ernest Guiraud. After serving as secretary to Charles Gounod, he received valuable advice from him, who helped him obtain a position as organist at Saint-Cloud. In 1893, he won the Prix de Rome, and on his return from Italy he began a career as a conductor. At the personal request of Claude Debussy, Büsser led the fourth performance, and numerous subsequent performances, of '' Pelléas et Mélisande''. He also became a protégé of Jules Massenet and was one of his closest friends during the last two decades of his life (Massenet died in 1912). Isao Tomita
, often known simply as Tomita, was a Japanese composer, regarded as one of the pioneers of electronic music and space music, and as one of the most famous producers of analog synthesizer arrangements. In addition to creating note-by-note realizations, Tomita made extensive use of the sound-design capabilities of his instrument, using synthesizers to create new sounds to accompany and enhance his electronic realizations of acoustic instruments. He also made effective use of analog music sequencers and the Mellotron, and featured futuristic science-fiction themes, while laying the foundations for synth-pop music and trance-like rhythms. ''Ashes Are Burning'' is the fourth studio album by the English progressive rock band Renaissance, released in 1973 (see 1973 in music). It was the first of several Renaissance albums to feature (on some songs) an orchestra playing along with the band. It was the band's first album to make the ''Billboard'' 200 album chart, peaking at No. 171. Background and recording With ''Ashes Are Burning'' Renaissance made a deliberate choice to head in a more acoustic direction, in order to accommodate their folk-influenced style and differentiate themselves from the many electric guitar-dominated bands on the scene. Because Renaissance were between guitarists at the time, bassist Jon Camp played most of the guitars on the album. Renaissance are an English progressive rock band, best known for their 1978 UK top 10 hit " Northern Lights" and progressive rock classics like "Carpet of the Sun", "Mother Russia", and "Ashes Are Burning". Grand Guignol (album)
''Grand Guignol'' is the second full-length studio album released by John Zorn's band Naked City in 1992 on the Japanese Avant label. The album followed '' Torture Garden'', which was a compilation of "hardcore miniatures" from '' Naked City'' and ''Grand Guignol''. The album is notable for the inclusion of cover versions of pieces written by classical composers, the guest vocal of Bob Dorough, and also, like ''Torture Garden'', a selection of "hardcore miniatures" (tracks 9–41) which are intense, fast-tempo, brief compositions, which feature the wailing of Zorn's alto sax, and the screams of Yamatsuka Eye. The album is titled after the infamous Grand Guignol theater in Paris, which was open from 1897 to 1962, where performances centered around extreme violence.
