La Plata Derby
The La Plata derby (Clásico Platense or Clásico de La Plata in Spanish) is one of the most fiercely contested derbies in Argentine football. It is played between local clubs Estudiantes and Gimnasia y Esgrima. The first official derby took place as part of the 1916 Argentine Primera División championship on August 27, 1916. On that occasion, Gimnasia won 1–0 over Estudiantes, with an owngoal by Ludovico Pastor. The largest victory in a derby was on October 15, 2006, when Estudiantes thrashed Gimnasia by 7-0 in the 11th fixture of the 2006–07 season. According to several studies related to social research in football, La Plata is one of the few cities in the country where the local clubs surpass Boca Juniors and River Plate in number of supporters. The other cities are Rosario, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Rafaela and San Miguel de Tucumán. Gastón Fernández
Gastón Nicolás Fernández (born 12 October 1983) is an Argentine former professional footballer who played as a forward. He spent most of his senior club career in Argentine Primera División side Estudiantes. Club career Nicknamed ''La Gata'' (''The Cat''), Fernández began his professional career with River Plate. After a stint with Racing and another season back with River, in 2006 he was loaned to Monterrey. When the contract was finished, Monterrey declined to pay the nearly two million dollars to permanently buy Gastón, thus prompting him to return to River Plate in December 2006. However, Daniel Passarella, then River's head coach, believed the team had enough strikers. Fernández was therefore sold to San Lorenzo de Almagro. Nacional Championship
The Campeonato Nacional was one of the two football tournaments that formed the Primera División season (along with the Metropolitano championship) since 1967. The Nacional championship was played annually until its last edition in 1985. The Nacional took place in the second half of the year while the Metropolitano took place in the first half of the year. Enrique Bernardo Vidallé (born 7 May 1952 in Canals, Córdoba) is a former Argentine football goalkeeper. He played for a number of clubs in Argentina and Palestino in Chile. Vidallé came through the Boca Juniors youth system to make his professional debut in 1972, he stayed at the club until his move to Chilean team Club Deportivo Palestino in 1975. Vidallé played a number of games for the Argentina national football team including appearances at the 1979 Copa América. Vidallé played for Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata in the late 70s and for their fiercest rivals Estudiantes de La Plata in the early 80s. Between 1982 and 1983 he played for Club Atlético Huracán before joining Argentinos Juniors in 1984. Héctor Vargas (born 15 March 1959) is an Argentinian soccer, football manager who has worked primarily in the Liga Nacional de Honduras and is currently manager of Real C.D. España, Real España. Gastón Alejandro Sessa (born 15 April 1973 in La Plata) is a retired Argentine professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He last played for Villa San Carlos in Argentina. Club career Sessa started his career with local club Estudiantes in 1993 before moving down a division to join Huracán Corrientes in 1995. Ricardo Infante
Ricardo Roberto Infante (21 June 1924 – 14 December 2008) was an Argentine Association football, football player and manager who played as a Forward (association football)#Striker, striker. He was the second-highest-scoring player in the history of Estudiantes de La Plata and the sixth-highest-scoring player in the professional era of the Primera División Argentina. Career Infante made his professional debut in 1942 for Estudiantes de La Plata, Estudiantes, he scored his first goal for the club on 1 August 1943 in a 2–2 draw with Chacarita Juniors. The Copa Centenario de la AFA was an official Argentine football cup competition contested by teams playing in Primera División. The championship was organized by the Argentine Football Association in 1993 in order to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
