''La planta insolente'' () is a 2017 Venezuelan film directed by Román Chalbaud. The film depicts the tenure of Venezuelan President Cipriano Castro. It was a box-office flop and received generally negative reviews from critics. Plot The film depicts the tenure of Venezuelan President Cipriano Castro, and the title is based on his quote: "The insolent plant of the foreigner has desecrated the sacred soil of the fatherland", his response to the Venezuelan crisis of 1902–1903, when European nations blockaded Venezuelan shores after Castro refused to pay foreign debts and damages. Production The idea for the movie stated in 2009 when, during the premiere of '' Zamora: Tierra y hombres libres'', President Hugo Chávez suggested to make a film about Cipriano Castro to Chalbaud and Luis Britto García, both of which had worked in the film as director and screenwriter, respectively. Román Chalbaud (born 10 October 1931) is a Venezuelan film director and screenwriter, as well as a prominent playwright. Starting work in television after prestigious training, Chalbaud moved into making films before the industry took off in his home country, returning to theatre where he had been a great success for several years until filmmaking became a viable industry again. He has served as the president of Venezuela's leading theatre, television, and film organisations. A documentary about his life and work called ''Román en el universo de las maravillas'', produced by Argentinian filmmakers, was released on 17 March 2018 in Altamira, Caracas at the Rómulo Gallegos Center for Latin American Studies. Francisco José Herrera Luque (Caracas, 14 December 1927 – Caracas, 15 April, 1991) was a Venezuelan writer, psychiatrist and diplomat. He is the author of several well-known historical novels, including: ''Boves, el Urogallo'' (1972), ''Los Amos del Valle'' (1979) and ''La Luna de Fausto'' (1983).
