La Paloma
"La Paloma", "The Dove" in English, is a popular Spanish song that has been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 140 years. The song was written by the Spanish Basque composer Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) around 1860 after a visit to Cuba. In 1879, it was registered at the copyright office in Madrid as a "Canción Americana con acompañamiento de Piano". Iradier was to die in obscurity within few years, never to learn how popular his song would become. Very quickly, "La Paloma" became popular outside of Spain, particularly in Mexico, and soon spread around the world. In many places, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Colombia, Hawaii, the Philippines, Germany, Romania, Venezuela, Zanzibar, and Goa it gained the status of a quasi-folk song. La Paloma is a census-designated place (CDP) in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,903 at the 2010 census, up from 354 at the 2000 census, when it was drawn to cover a much smaller area. It is part of the Brownsville– Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area. ''La Paloma'' means "the dove" in Spanish. Geography La Paloma is located in southwestern Cameron County at (26.048605, -97.667017). It is on the north side of U.S. Route 281, northwest of the center of Brownsville and east of Los Indios. It is less than one mile north of the Rio Grande, the Mexico–United States border. According to the United States Census Bureau, the La Paloma CDP has a total area of , all of it land. La Paloma is a small city in the Rocha Department of southeastern Uruguay. Geography The city is located on Km. 244 of Route 10 and on its junction with Route 15, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, about southwest of La Pedrera and northeast of Faro José Ignacio of the Maldonado Department. ''La Paloma'' (English title: ''The Dove'') is a Mexican telenovela produced by José Rendón for Televisa in 1995. Gerardo Hemmer and Maite Embil starred as protagonists. The telenovela was cancelled abruptly due to the death of its protagonist Gerardo Hemmer. It was supposed to go on after his death, however, after filming a couple more scenes, Televisa had decided to just cancel the novel altogether. It is, to date the only telenovela from Televisa that has suddenly gone off air, leaving it unfinished at just 50 episodes.
