La Calera is a city and commune in the Quillota Province of central Chile's fifth region of Valparaíso. Geography La Calera is located northeast of Valparaíso, and northwest of Santiago, in the Aconcagua River Valley. Its area is . La Calera (oasis)
La Calera is a small oasis and orchard in the Atacama Desert of Chile. The oasis is irrigated by an underground canal, a puquio tapping an aquifer. Located at 1,390 meters above sea level (m asl.) La Calera lies about 15 kilometers north of the larger oasis of Pica. A map of Tarapacá published in 1765 by Antonio O'Brien show two small houses and cultivated field in La Calera. O'Brien describes it as the site of a small hacienda (''azenduela'') noting that alfalfa, figs, pumpkins and water melons were cultivated in the oasis. La Calera had twelve inhabitants by 1883 and was considered an important stopover in the route to Bolivia, given its "abundant grass and water". It was also considered a shorter route than its alternatives. The Atacama Desert ( es, Desierto de Atacama) is a desert plateau in South America covering a 1,600 km (990 mi) strip of land on the Pacific coast, west of the Andes Mountains. Unión La Calera is a Chilean football club based in La Calera and competes the Primera División de Chile. It was founded as Club de Deportes La Calera on 26 January 1954, after the merger of three teams from the city: ''Condor'', ''Calera Comercio'' and ''Tifón''. The following year, Deportes La Calera joined ''Club de Deportes Melón'' (originated by the merger between Cemento Melón and Minas Navío) to form Unión La Calera. After spending six seasons in second level, the club obtained its first promotion to Primera División de Chile in 1961, category where they remained until 1974. In 1985, they returned to top-tier, but they were relegated the incoming season.
