The MUD trees below depict hierarchies of derivation among MUD codebases. Solid lines between boxes indicate code relationships, while dotted lines indicate conceptual relationships. Dotted boxes indicate that the codebase is outside the family depicted. Note that codebases are different from individual servers, in the same way that a biological family/genus/species is different from a specific bird at a zoo or fossil imprint in a museum. Some of the codebases below are incredibly popular, with many servers based on them; other codebases may only be found on archive sites, making them available but effectively extinct. LPMud, abbreviated LP, is a family of MUD server software. Its first instance, the original LPMud game driver, was developed in 1989 by Lars Pensjö (hence the LP in LPMud). LPMud was innovative in its separation of the MUD infrastructure into a virtual machine (known as the driver) and a development framework written in the LPC programming language (known as the mudlib). Motivation Pensjö had been an avid player of TinyMUD and AberMUD. He wanted to create a world with the flexibility of TinyMUD and the style of AberMUD. Furthermore, he did not want to have sole responsibility for creating and maintaining the game world. He once said, "I didn't think I would be able to design a good adventure. By allowing wizards coding rights, I thought others could help me with this." Codebase
In software development, a codebase (or code base) is a collection of source code used to build a particular software system, application, or software component. Typically, a codebase includes only human-written source code files; thus, a codebase usually does not include source code files generated by tools (generated files) or binary library files (object files), as they can be built from the human-written source code. However, it generally does include configuration and property files, as they are the data necessary for the build. A codebase is typically stored in a source control repository in a version control system. Dworkin's Game Driver
DGD, Dworkin's Game Driver (at one time called Dworkin's Generic Driver), is an LPMud server written by Felix A. "Dworkin" Croes. DGD pioneered important technical innovations in MUDs, particularly disk-based object storage, full world persistence, separation of concerns between driver and mudlib, runtime morphism, automatic garbage collection, lightweight objects and LPC-to- C compilation. History DGD's first public release was on August 12, 1993. The first publicly available MUD to use DGD was ''PaderMUD'' (later '' Xyllomer''), in December 1993. The original primary development MUD for DGD was ''The Pattern'', referencing The Chronicles of Amber (like Croes's pseudonym Dworkin, which refers to Dworkin Barimen). Copper MUD
Copper is a chemical element with the symbol Cu (from la, cuprum) and atomic number 29. It is a soft, malleable, and ductile metal with very high thermal and electrical conductivity. Sequent (MUD)
Sequent was a DikuMUD derivative codebase developed by Raja Kushalnagar ("Duke of Sequent"). It was a text-based online role-playing game that was an accessible DikuMUD based MUD. It added several new playing areas with shorter text descriptions that was designed to be accessible to users with sensory disabilities. It also supported more players online at the same time by being hosted on a Sequent multi-processor machine at the University of California, Berkeley, and was first started in March 1991. History ''The Sequent DikuMUD'' enhanced both the codebase and database of the DikuMUD Gamma version. The codebase enhancements increased the number of spells and guilds, plus supporting multiple active zones, chat channels and guilds.
