LNWR Prince Of Wales Tank Class
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Prince of Wales Tank Class was a pacific tank engine version of the Prince of Wales Class 4-6-0 steam locomotive. History Bowen-Cooke's predecessor George Whale had built 50 related Precursor Tank Class 4-4-2 engines. In terms of familial relationships, Prince of Wales Tank was both a superheated and extended version of the Precursor Tank, and a version of the Prince of Wales Class 4-6-0 steam locomotive with side tanks and a bunker which necessitated an extension to the frames and trailing pony truck. They were used on suburban services out of Euston station and from an early date also used on passenger services between Shrewsbury and Swansea (Victoria) over the steeply-graded Central Wales line, a journey of some 120 miles. Charles Bowen Cooke
Charles John Bowen Cooke (11 January 1859 – 18 October 1920) was born in Orton Longueville (then in Huntingdonshire) and was Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) of the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). He was the first to add superheating to the locomotives of the railway. He wrote a book called ''British locomotives: their history, construction; and modern development'' which was published in 1893, with a second edition in 1894, and third in 1899 A second book, ''Developments in Locomotive Practice'' followed in 1902. Whilst CME of the LNWR he was responsible for the introduction of several new locomotive designs, including the ''George the Fifth'' and ''Claughton'' classes. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1918 New Year Honours for his efforts during the First World War. LNWR Precursor Tank Class
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) "Precursor Tank" Class was a type of 4-4-2 tank steam locomotive. Fifty were built to the design of George Whale between May 1906 and April 1909, being a tank engine version of his "Precursor" Class. Chronologically, the class was constructed three distinct blocks, from May to September 1906 (works nos. 4560–4589), March to April 1907 (4590–4599), and March to April 1909 (4820–4829). The first 30 locomotives had carrying wheels, but the size of these was reduced to thereafter. The LNWR reused numbers from withdrawn locomotives, so the numbering system was completely haphazard. Superheated
A superheater is a device used to convert saturated steam or wet steam into superheated steam or dry steam. Superheated steam is used in steam turbines for electricity generation, steam engines, and in processes such as steam reforming. There are three types of superheaters: radiant, convection, and separately fired. A superheater can vary in size from a few tens of feet to several hundred feet (a few metres to some hundred metres). George Whale
George Whale (7 December 1842 – 7 March 1910) was an English locomotive engineer who was born in Bocking, Essex, and educated in Lewisham, London. He worked for the London and North Western Railway (LNWR). Career In 1858 he entered the LNWR's Wolverton Works under James Edward McConnell, and when in 1862 the LNWR Board decided to concentrate locomotive construction and repair at Crewe Works under John Ramsbottom, Whale was one of around 400 workers transferred from Wolverton to Crewe. In 1865 he entered the drawing office at Crewe Works, and in 1867 joined the LNWR running department under J. Rigg. In 1898 he was made responsible for the running of all LNWR locomotives. Francis William Webb, the LNWR Locomotive Superintendent, gave twelve months notice of retirement to the LNWR Board in November 1902. Crewe Works
Crewe Works is a British railway engineering facility located in the town of Crewe, Cheshire. The works, which was originally opened by the Grand Junction Railway in 1840, employed around 7,000 to 8,000 workers at its peak. In the 1980s, a lot of the engineering works were closed. Much of the site has been redeveloped but the remaining parts are owned and operated by French-owned multinational rolling stock manufacturer, Alstom SA. During the late 19th century, the London and North Western Railway used Crewe Works to produce many famous locomotives such as the Webb Jumbo class and the compounds, the Whale Experiment and Precursor classes, and the Bowen-Cooke Claughtons.
