L'Aigle
L'Aigle is a commune in the Orne department in Normandy in northwestern France. Before 1961, the commune was known as ''Laigle''. According to Orderic Vitalis, the nest of an eagle (''aigle'' in French) was discovered during the construction of the castle. The river Risle flows through the commune. L'Aigle station has rail connections to Argentan, Paris and Granville. Meteorite On 26 April 1803 a meteoroid entered the Earth's atmosphere and air burst over L'Aigle. L'Aigle Family
The l'Aigle family was a Norman family that derived from the town of L'Aigle, on the southeastern borders of the Duchy of Normandy. They first appear during the rule of Duke Richard II of Normandy, in the early 11th century, and they would hold L'Aigle for the Norman Dukes and Kings of England until the first half of the 13th century, when with the fall of Normandy to the French crown the last of the line was forced to abandon the ancestral French lands, only to die in England a few years later without surviving English heirs. L'Aigle is a L6 meteorite that fell on 26 April 1803 in Lower Normandy, France. History In the early afternoon of 26 April 1803 a meteorite shower of more than 3000 fragments fell upon the town of L'Aigle in Normandy, France. Upon hearing of this event the French Academy of Sciences sent the young scientist Jean-Baptiste Biot to investigate that spectacular fall of stones. Clausthal-Zellerfeld is a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located in the southwestern part of the Harz mountains. Its population is approximately 15,000. Risle
The Risle (; less common: ''Rille'') is a long river in Normandy, left tributary of the Seine. The river begins in the Orne department west of L'Aigle, crosses the western part of the department of Eure flowing from south to north and out into the estuary of the Seine on the left bank near Berville-sur-Mer. Its upper valley is part of the Pays d'Ouche, its lower valley separates the regions of the Lieuvin and Roumois. The Risle is regarded as a coastal river. Fishing is common downstream at Pont-Audemer. On July 30, 2012, the Risle vanished in a ponor between La Ferrière-sur-Risle and La Houssaye. It runs underground for .
