L'Espalier
''L’Espalier'' was a French restaurant located in Boston, Massachusetts, in the Back Bay neighborhood, adjacent to the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The chef and owner of L'Espalier was Frank McClelland, who received a James Beard Foundation Award in 2007 for Best Northeast Chef. History Chef Moncef Meddeb opened L'Espalier on Boylston Street between Arlington and Berkeley in 1978. It moved to an 1880s-era brick townhouse on Gloucester Street in 1982 and was purchased by McClelland in 1988. The restaurant moved again into the Mandarin Oriental complex in 2008. It was designed by Martin Vahtra of Projects Design in New York. L'Espalier is known locally as a popular place for marriage proposals and celebrity sightings. On March 27, 2013 McClelland celebrated their 35th anniversary with a specially designed six course tasting menu including Jonah crab bisque, branzino and rack of lamb. Moncef Meddeb (chef)
Moncef Meddeb (died March 26, 2019) was an American chef and founder of L'Espalier Boston's first Le Cordon Bleu restaurant. Biography Meddeb, the son of Tunisian immigrants, grew up in Paris. He emigrated to the United States in the late 1960s. He met Suzanne Owen, a Peace Corps volunteer, while he was in Tunis and working in a bank. They married and moved in with her father in Connecticut. He attended the University of Connecticut before transferring to Harvard College and graduating with a political science degree. His first cooking job was when he was at Harvard, working at the Harvard Square restaurant Casablanca. Another source says his first job was at the adjacent Algiers Cafe as a dishwasher. He later worked as the Main Chef at 7 Central in Manchester by the sea. He opened L'Espalier in 1978 selling it to Frank McClelland in 1988. Frank McClelland is a chef and restaurateur in the Boston area who received a James Beard Foundation Award in 2007 for Best Northeast Chef. Culinary career In 1988, McClelland bought L'Espalier, a fine dining French restaurant in the Back Bay, from Moncef Meddeb (chef) before closing it in 2018. His second restaurant was Sel de la Terre on State Street. In 2016 he opened the Essex, Massachusetts restaurant Riverbend. While at L’Espalier, he was the founder and CEO of New France which was a holding company for his restaurants. Along with Daniel Bojorquez with whom he had worked at L’Espalier and Sel de la Terre, he opened La Brasa in Somerville. The eponymous Frank opened in 2019 in Beverly, Massachusetts.
