Vernon Sewell
Vernon Campbell Sewell (4 July 1903 – 21 June 2001) was a British film director, writer, producer and, briefly, an actor. Sewell was born in London, England, and was educated at Marlborough College. He directed more than 30 films during his career, starting with '' Morgenrot'' (1933) and ending with '' Burke & Hare'' (1971). He worked chiefly in B-movies, some of which were, according to the BFI Screenonline, "well above the usual cut-price standards of film-making at this level." He was married to the actress Joan Carol (born Joan Roscoe Catt 1905-1986) in 1950. Vernon Sewell died on 21 June 2001 in Durban, South Africa, at age 97. The Medium (1934 Film)
''The Medium'' is a short (one-hour-long) two-act dramatic opera with words and music by Gian Carlo Menotti. Commissioned by the Alice M. Ditson Fund at Columbia University, its first performance was there on 8 May 1946. The opera's first professional production was presented on a double bill with Menotti's ''The Telephone'' at the Heckscher Theater, New York City, February 18–20, 1947 by the Ballet Society. The Broadway production took place on May 1, 1947, at the Ethel Barrymore Theater with the same cast. In 1951, Menotti directed, with the help of filmmaker Alexander Hammid, a film version made to resemble film noir, and starring Marie Powers as Madame Flora and Anna Maria Alberghetti as Monica. A live television production starring Marie Powers took place on 12 December 1948 on the TV series ''Studio One'' and on 14 February, 1959 on ''Omnibus'', starring Claramae Turner. ''Latin Quarter'' is a 1945 British thriller, which was directed by Vernon Sewell and stars Derrick De Marney, Joan Greenwood and Beresford Egan. The film is an adaptation of the play ''L'Angoisse'' by Pierre Mills and C. Vylars. It was Sewell's second film version of the story, following ''The Medium'' in 1934. It was made by British National Films at their studios in Elstree. Plot In the Paris of 1893, sculptor Charles Garrie (De Marney) enters into an illicit relationship with the married Christine Minetti (Greenwood). Christine's husband Anton (Egan) is also a sculptor, and mentally unstable. Anton finds out about Christine's affair and soon after she vanishes without trace. Although the police consider Anton the prime suspect in being involved in his wife's disappearance, they can find no incriminating evidence, nor any lead as to her whereabouts, alive or dead. ''Ghost Ship'' is a 1952 British horror thriller film directed by Vernon Sewell and starring Dermot Walsh and Hazel Court. It was written by Vernon Sewell and Philip Thornton. This was one of four attempts by Vernon Sewell to adapt and film an obscure Pierre Mills and Celia de Vilyars Grand Guignol stage play, called '' L'Angoisse''. It was shot at Merton Park Studios as a second feature. The 2002 film of the same title is completely unrelated and not considered a remake. ''House of Mystery'' is a 1961 British supernatural mystery film. Plot A pair of newlyweds visit an old cottage for sale in the country, and hear the housekeeper's account of its macabre history. The previous owners had been disturbed by paranormal activity, and on calling in a medium, the ghost was identified as an eccentric and vengeful scientist, once resident in the cottage. The scientist was obsessed with electricity, and when his unfaithful wife and her lover attempted to murder him, he responded by electrifying the living room floor and fixtures, and challenging the couple to escape.
