Kęstutis Skučas
Kęstutis Skučas (born 27 August 1967) is a Lithuanian Paralympic athlete who competes in international elite track and field competitions in wheelchair racing and occasionally discus throw and a former Paralympic swimmer. He is a European champion in the 400m and is also a European bronze medalist in the discus throw. Skučas is a double World silver medalist and Paralympic silver medalist in backstroke swimming. Skučas joined the Soviet military after he had left high school aged nineteen. He was sent to Arkhangelsk Oblast, Russia and while he served there, he developed inflammation in his spinal cord and sharp back pain attributed to the cold temperatures which often dropped to -40 Celsius. Paralympic Athletics
Para-athletics is the sport of athletics practised by people with a disability as a disabled sports, parasport. The list of athletics events, athletics events within the parasport are mostly the same as those available to able-bodied people, with two major exceptions in wheelchair racing and the club throw, which are specific to the division. The sport is known by various names, including disability athletics, disabled track and field and Paralympic athletics. Top-level competitors may be called elite athletes with disability. Competitors are typically organised into three broad categories: deaf sports, athletes with a physical disability, and athletes with an intellectual disability. Swimming At The Paralympics
Swimming has been contested at every Summer Paralympics. At the first games, the 1960 Paralympics, 62 swimming events were held in distances of 25 and 50 metres, plus a 3×50 metre relay for men. Since then, swimming at the Paralympics has grown to 140 events covering distances from 50 to 400 metres, plus 4×50 and 4×100 metre relays. Along with track and field athletics, it is one of the largest sports at the Paralympics in terms of the number of events, competitors, and spectators.
