Körfuknattleiksfélag ÍA, commonly known as ÍA, is a basketball team based in Akranes, Iceland. It is a subdivision of the sport club Íþróttabandalag Akraness. Its men's team played in the top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla from 1993 to 2000, making the playoffs in 1994, 1997 and 1998. Its women's team played one season in the top-tier Úrvalsdeild kvenna during the 1995-1996 season. Men's basketball Recent history On 22 November 2018, American Chaz Franklin scored a career high 53 points in á 94-123 victory against Leiknir Reykjavík. On 16 April 2019, ÍA lost to Ungmennafélag Álftaness in the 2. deild karla finals, 123-100. On 4 October 2019, Ingimundur Orri Jóhansson scored 50 points for ÍA in a 151-113 loss against Reynir Sandgerði. Akranes
Akranes () is a port town and municipality on the west coast of Iceland, around north of the capital Reykjavík. The area where Akranes is located was settled in the 9th century; however, it did not receive a municipal charter until 1942. History Akranes was settled in the 9th century by the brothers Þormóður and Ketill, sons of Bresi, who came from Ireland. The town started to form in the mid-17th century as a fishing village. Brynjar Karl Sigurðsson
Brynjar Karl Sigurðsson (born 17 September 1973) is an Icelandic businessman, basketball coach and former player. He played several seasons in the Icelandic top-tier Úrvalsdeild karla and was a member of the Icelandic national team. Following his basketball career, he founded the company Sideline Sports which designed coaching software used by the Premier League, NBA and the NFL. A controversial figure in Iceland, he has been scrutinized for his coaching methods and fight with the Icelandic Basketball Association to let his junior women's team compete in boys tournaments. ''DV'' (''Dagblaðið Vísir'') is an online newspaper in Iceland published by Torg ehf. It came into existence as a daily newspaper in 1981 when two formerly independent newspapers, Vísir and Dagblaðið, merged. Early on it was one of the largest newspapers in Iceland and at one point had a 64% readership in Iceland. Valur Women's Basketball
The Valur women's basketball team, commonly known as Valur, is a basketball team based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is part of the Valur multi-sport club. In 2019, it won its first national championship. Recent history Valur played in the 2018 Úrvalsdeild finals, losing to Haukar 2-3. In April 2019, Valur won its first ever national championship when it beat Keflavík in the Úrvalsdeild finals 3-0. The team opened the 2019–20 season by defeating Keflavík, 105-81, in the annual Icelandic Super Cup. Terry Acox
Terrance L. Acox (born 1969) is an American former professional basketball player. Professional career In September 1992, Acox signed with Körfuknattleiksfélag ÍA in the Icelandic 1. deild karla where he became an instant fan favorite due to his 50-inch vertical leap and high flying dunks. On 29 November 1992, he broke the backboard with a dunk during a game against UMFB in Bolungarvík with 11 minutes remaining. With no replacement backboard, the head referee of the game, Leifur Garðarsson, decided to continue the game using the side baskets and forbade both teams to dunk for the rest of the game. In February 1993, Acox was selected to the Icelandic All-Star game where he scored 26 points. He also participated in the dunk contest which he went on to win convincingly. Pavel Ermolinskij (born 25 January 1987) is an Icelandic basketball coach and former player of Ukrainian descent, a member of the Icelandic national team. He has won the Icelandic championship with KR seven times, in 2011 and 2014–2019. He played in the Spanish Liga ACB for several seasons, winning the Spanish King's Cup in 2005. Terrence Watson (born March 3, 1987) is an American-Israeli professional basketball player for Hapoel Eilat of the Israeli Premier League. Milton Sylvester Bell (born August 21, 1970) is an American former basketball player. After playing college basketball for the Georgetown Hoyas, he went on to play professionally in Europe and South America. High school Bell played basketball at John Marshall High School in Richmond, Virginia.
