Kåre Langvik-Johannessen
Kåre Johannes Langvik-Johannessen (10 April 1919 – 27 October 2014) was a Norwegian philologist, literary historian and translator. He was born in Onsøy as a son of manager Hans Johannessen (1889–1986) and Betzy Langvik (1887–1963). He finished his secondary education in 1939 in Fredrikstad, and during the Second World War he studied piano and organ, and took commerce school. He enrolled in Norwegian studies at the University of Oslo in 1946, and graduated with the cand.mag. degree in 1948. The same year he travelled to the Hague to study Dutch language and literature. He took another degree at the University of Oslo in 1955 with the master's thesis ''Det bibelske drama i Nederlandene før Joost van den Vondel''. In 1963 he took the dr.philos. degree on the topic Joost van den Vondel with the thesis ''Zwischen Himmel und Erde'' (1963). Onsøy
Onsøy is a peninsula and a former municipality in Østfold county, Norway. The administrative centre was Gressvik. History The parish of ''Onsø'' was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). A part of Onsøy with 170 inhabitants was moved to the neighboring municipality Fredrikstad on 1 January 1968. On 1 January 1994 the rest of Onsøy was incorporated into Fredrikstad. Prior to the merger Onsøy had a population of 12.923. Etymology The Old Norse form of the name was ''Óðinsøy''. The first element is the genitive case of the name of the god Odin, the last element is ''øy'' meaning 'island'. The former island was later turned into a peninsula because of post-glacial rebound. Onsøy Church Onsøy Church (''Onsøy kirke'') was built in 1877. The architect was Henrik Thrap-Meyer. The church is of Gothic Revival style and constructed of brick with has 375 seats. Johannes Gjerdåker
Johannes Gjerdåker (15 February 1936 – 27 April 2020) was a Norwegian local historian, poet, translator, non-fiction writer and publisher. Gjerdåker was born in Voss, and studied history and language at the University of Oslo. He made his literary debut in 1978 with the poetry collection . He wrote several works on local history of Voss and Hordaland. In 1992 he was awarded the cultural prize from the municipality of Voss. He received the Bastian Prize in 1997 and the Melsom Prize in 1999, both for translation of works by Robert Burns into Nynorsk. In 2005 he received the Critics Prize for the year's best work of translation, for translation of works by Horace Quintus Horatius Flaccus (; 8 December 65 – 27 November 8 BC), known in the English-speaking world as Horace (), was the leading Roman lyric poet during the time of Augustus (also known as Octavian). Nils Ivar Agøy
Nils Ivar Agøy (born 19 November 1959) is a Norwegian historian, theologian, tolkienologist and translator. He hails from Gjøvik. He took the cand.philol. degree in history at the University of Oslo in 1987, with the master's thesis ''Kampen mot vernetvangen. Militærnekterspørsmålet i Norge 1885–1922''. The thesis chronicled and explained conscientious objection in Norway before 1922. His academic advisor was Jorunn Bjørgum. Already in 1988 he graduated with the cand.theol. degree in theology at the MF Norwegian School of Theology. Subsequently, he was employed as a research fellow in history at the Peace Research Institute Oslo, finishing his dr.philos. degree in history in 1994.
