Kåfjord, Alta
Kåfjord is a village in Alta Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The village is located along the Kåfjorden, about west of the town of Alta along the European route E6 highway. The village of Kvenvik lies about to the east, also along the E6 highway. At the summit of Mount Haldde, about by a track from Kåfjord, is a restored Northern Lights Observatory, established by Kristian Birkeland in 1899 and operational until 1926, when it was transferred to Tromsø. History Copper ore was mined at Kåfjord between 1826 and 1909. A mining company, Alten Copper Mines, was founded by two Englishmen in 1826. By the 1840s, the village had grown to become the largest settlement in Finnmark county, with over 1,000 inhabitants, including Englishmen from Cornwall. The copper works are now closed and derelict. Kåfjorden (Alta)
or is a fjord in Alta Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The long fjord branches off the main Altafjorden. The village of Kåfjord and the Kåfjord Church both lie along the northern coast of the fjord. The European route E06 highway follows the northern shoreline of the fjord. A bridge over Kåfjorden was built in 2013 to shorten the E6 highway route around the fjord. The fjord was the anchorage of the German battleship ''Tirpitz'' for much of World War II, which was attacked by British midget submarines during Operation Source in 1943 and by aircraft during Operation Tungsten, Operation Mascot, Operation Goodwood and Operation Paravane in 1944. Kåfjord Church (Finnmark)
Kåfjord Church ( no, Kåfjord kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Alta Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Kåfjord. It is an annex church for the Alta parish which is part of the Alta prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1837 using plans drawn up by an unknown architect, making it the oldest surviving church building in Alta. The church seats about 300 people. Kåfjord, Nordkapp
Kåfjord is a small village in Nordkapp Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located on the Porsanger Peninsula, along the Kåfjorden, an arm off of the main Porsangerfjorden. Kåfjorden (Nordkapp)
Kåfjorden ( sme, Gávkevuotna) is a fjord in Nordkapp Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The long fjord is located on the Porsanger Peninsula and it flows past the village of Kåfjord. It is located about southeast of the town of Honningsvåg. The fjord flows out into the Magerøysundet strait and then into the Porsangerfjorden. The European route E69 highway follows the southern coast of the fjord, and the entrance to the North Cape Tunnel lies on the western coast of the fjord. Kåfjord Church
Kåfjord Church ( no, Kåfjord kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Gáivuotna–Kåfjord Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Olderdalen. It is the church for the Kåfjord parish which is part of the Nord-Troms prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The red, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1949 using plans drawn up by the architect Kirsten Sand. The church seats about 250 people. History The first chapel building in Kåfjord was built in 1722 in connection with the Sami mission led by Thomas von Westen. It was known as the ''Finnekapellet''. The chapel was about long and it was used until around the year 1800. After that time, residents would travel to the Lyngen Church, about down the fjord.
