A tehsil (, also known as tahsil, taluka, or taluk) is a local unit of administrative division in some countries of South Asia. It is a subdistrict of the area within a district including the designated populated place that serves as its administrative centre, with possible additional towns, and usually a number of villages. The terms in India have replaced earlier terms, such as '' pargana'' (''pergunnah'') and ''thana''. Mayiladuthurai district is one of the 38 List of districts of Tamil Nadu, districts of the state of Tamil Nadu in India. The district headquarters is located at Mayiladuthurai. Geography The district is bounded on the north by Cuddalore district, on the west by Thanjavur district, on the south by Tiruvarur district and Karaikal district of Puducherry (union territory), Puducherry, and the Bay of Bengal to the east. Kuthalam (Tiruthuruthi (now known as Kuthalam)) is a panchayat town in Mayiladuthurai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The language being spoken is Tamil. Kutthalam is located at the distance of 285 km from Chennai, 13 km from Mayladuthurai and 24 km from Kumbakonam. Demographics As of the 2011 India census, Kuthalam had a population of 115,823.
