Kusuma Rajaratne
Kusuma Rajaratne (née Perera) (12 December 1925 - May 2007) was a Ceylonese politician. Kusuma Perera was born on 12 December 1925 in Kotte the second of four children to Awis Perera, an Ayurvedic physician and Caroline Hamine. Kusuma received her education at Ananda Sastralaya and Anula Vidyalaya before entered the University of Colombo. On 24 August 1950 she married Konara Mudiyanselage Podiappuhamy Rajaratne, a teacher and lecturer, whom she had known since her school days at Ananda Sastralaya. Her husband stood as a candidate for Welimada at the 1952 parliamentary election but failed to get elected after coming third. On 26 August 1955 the district court in Badulla convicted Rajaratne, who had been his own election agent at the 1952 parliamentary election, of not submitting his election expenses and fined him Rs. 100. National Liberation Front (Ceylon)
Jathika Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP; National Liberation Front) was a political party formed in 1957 by the K. M. P. Rajaratne and his wife, Kusuma Rajaratne. The JVP received support from local businesses, and anti-Tamil riots were extreme in villages in which it was active. Riots Following the arrangement for talks between Federal Tamils and the government of Ceylon, riots broke out against the country's Tamil population. Several Sinhalese mobs broke into Tamil houses and attacked. The attacks included rape. This violence were higher in the Polonnaruwa district. Tamil (; ' , ) is a Dravidian language natively spoken by the Tamil people of South Asia. July 1960 Ceylonese Parliamentary Election
Snap parliamentary elections were held in Ceylon in July 1960. Background The March 1960 election had left neither of Ceylon's two major parties with a majority, so another election was inevitable. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which had been in disarray since the murder of its leader S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike the previous year, settled on his widow, Sirimavo, as its new leader. She pledged to continue her husband's policies, notably the Sinhala Only Act, and to proceed with repatriation of the estate Tamils to India. However, she promised to reach a compromise with the Federal Party. The United National Party, led by Dudley Senanayake, refused to compromise with the Federal Party. It also differed with the SLFP over economic policy. The SLFP called for a socialist program of nationalization of both private enterprises and religious schools; the UNP preferred to leave both in private hands.
