Kuskokwim Mountains
The Kuskokwim Mountains is a range of mountains in the Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska, United States, west of the Alaska Range and southeast of the Yukon River. The Kuskokwim Mountains begin in the interior west of Fairbanks. The mountain range extend from Canyon Creek and Chikuminuk Lake in the southwest over a distance of about long to the Tanana River in the northeast and reach a width of up to . The southeast flank of the Kuskokwim Mountains borders the rivers Kantishna, Kuskokwim, Holitna and Kogrukluk. In the northwest lie the Kaiyuh, Russian and Kilbuck Mountains as well as the rivers Innoko, Dishna and Iditarod. The range takes its name from the Kuskokwim River, which flows through the mountains, as well as Aniak and Nowitna rivers. Reported and defined in 1898 by Josiah Edward Spurr of the USGS. Dishna (, from ) is an Egyptian settlement west of Qena situated on the north bank of the river Nile. Geography Dishna is from Cairo. History An expedition of the Southern University of Texas explored the Sebilian culture on the Dishna plains. The ''Ain Khoman'' tools of Oasis Baharia were identified as similar to the Esnan industry of the Dishna dated to c.12,300 B.P, differing only with respect to bifacial tools. Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. Ahklun Mountains
The Ahklun Mountains are located in the northeast section of the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge in southwest Alaska. They extend southwest from the Kanektok and Narogurum Rivers to Hagemeister Strait and Kuskokwim Bay and support the only existing glaciers in western Alaska. They are the highest Alaskan mountain range west of the Alaska Range and north of the Alaska Peninsula: some summits in the range have many glaciers. To the west is the Kuskokwim River and to the east are the Bristol Bay lowlands. The Ahklun Mountains have many lakes, some more than deep. The mountains cover approximately 80 percent of the Togiak National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge also contains tundra and coastal plains. Josiah Edward Spurr
Josiah Edward Spurr (1870–1950) was an American geologist, explorer, and author. Born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, he was considered something of a failure as a youth, unsuited for the family fishing business, since on a voyage he invariably became seasick. Since he could not be a productive fisherman like his brothers, his parents decided he might as well go to college. After working his way through Harvard, he began his career with the Minnesota Geological Survey, making the first-ever geological map of the great Mesabi iron range in Minnesota. J. E. Spurr led two expeditions of historic importance in Alaska for the United States Geological Survey in 1896 and 1898, made without the benefit of telephones, airplanes, the internal combustion engine, or electrical appliances. In 1896 he led the first expedition to map and chart the interior of Alaska, exploring the Yukon Territory, where gold had been discovered.
