Kurt Gudewill
Kurt Gudewill (3 February 1911 – 29 July 1995) was a German musicologist and University lecturer. From 1952 to 1976 he was professor at the musicological institute of the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. He rendered outstanding services to Heinrich Schütz and Lied research. Life Birth and youth in Itzehoe Born in Itzehoe, Gudewill came from a Prussian officer family. So was his uncle, Corvette Captain Hans Gudewill (1866-1904), commander of the German gunboat SMS '' Habicht'' and temporary commander of the Schutztruppen in German East Africa. Walther Vetter
Walther Hermann Vetter (10 May 1891 – 1 April 1967) was a German musicologist. From 1946 to 1958, he was professor at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Life Born in Berlin, Vetter, Lutheran, was the son of the Kapellmeister Johannes Vetter (1860–1928), a founding member of the Berlin Philharmonic. In 1897 the family moved to Greiz in the Principality of Reuss-Greiz (today: Thuringia), where the father founded an orchestra. Vetter first attended the and then, until the Abitur, the Latina (Old school) of the Francke Foundations in Halle an der Saale. From 1910, he studied musicology, art history and philosophy at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg and conducting at the Leipzig Conservatory (with Hans Sitt, Stephan Krehl and Richard Hofmann). Hans Joachim Moser
Hans Joachim Moser (25 May 1889, Berlin''Die kleine Enzyklopädie'', Encyclios-Verlag, Zurich, 1950, Vol. 2, p. 202. – 14 August 1967, Berlin) was a German musicologist, composer and singer. Moser was the son of the music-professor Andreas Moser (1859–1925), a pupil and important early biographer of Joseph Joachim. He studied the History of Music (mainly with Gustav Jenner and Robert Kahn), German philology and Philosophy in Marburg, Berlin and Leipzig, and studied violin with his father. With the work Musical Confederations in the German Middle Ages he obtained his doctorate in 1910 at Rostock. He took part as a lieutenant during the First World War, was officially accepted as part of the University of Halle in 1919, and in 1922 became extraordinary Professor. Arnold Schering
Arnold Schering (2 April 1877 in Breslau, German Empire – 7 March 1941 in Berlin) was a German musicologist. He grew up in Dresden as the son of an art publisher. He learned violin at the from which he graduated in 1896. Thereafter he studied violin at the Berlin School of Music under Joseph Joachim. From 1898 until 1902 he studied music in Berlin and Leipzig and wrote his dissertation on the instrumental concertos of Antonio Vivaldi (in German, ''Geschichte des Instrumentalkonzertes bei Antonio Vivaldi'') and this work was influential in resurrecting the music of this composer. Wilhelm Heinitz
Wilhelm Heinitz (9 December 1883 in Altona – 31 March 1963 in Hamburg) was a German musicologist. After training and working as a bassoonist, Heinitz became a member of staff at the Phonetics Laboratory of the University of Hamburg in 1915 and studied musicology there. He received his doctorate (PhD) on a topic of phonetics in 1920 in Kiel and his habilitation in 1931 with the paper ''Strukturprobleme in primitiver Musik'' at the University of Hamburg, where he subsequently headed the research department for comparative musicology until 1949. In November 1933 he signed the vow of allegiance of the Professors of the German Universities and High-Schools to Adolf Hitler and the National Socialistic State. Heinitz died at the age of 79.
