Kurenivka
Kurenivka or Kurenyovka ( uk, Куренівка; russian: Куренёвка, translit.: ''Kurenyovka'') is a historical neighbourhood in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. It is located between the neighbourhoods of Podil, Obolon, Priorka, and Syrets. History Kurenivka has been known since the 17th century as a suburb of the city of Kyiv. Here were located several '' kurins'' of the Kyiv Cossack Kosh. Some historians attribute the origin of the name with these Cossack camps, with ''kurin'' meaning Cossack caps. Later the suburb became a cottage settlement. With Kyiv's expansion through the centuries, Kurenivka was slowly populated. These inhabitants bought out land, and created their gardens. This had made the area more like a neighbourhood, serving Kyiv with various grocery products. 1961 Kurenivka Mudslide
The Kurenivka mudslide occurred on 13 March 1961 in Kyiv, then a city in the Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. It took place near the historic Babi Yar ravine, which had been the site of the mass murder of more than 100,000 Jews and other civilians during World War II. The mudslide began at the edge of the ravine and dumped mud, water, and human remains into the streets of Kyiv. The Soviet authorities suppressed information about the disaster, and claimed 145 people were killed, while forbidding any memorial events for the victims. A 2012 study in Ukraine estimated that the number of victims was closer to 1,500. Obolonskyi District
Obolonskyi District ( uk, Оболонський район, ''Obolons'kyi raion'') is an urban district of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. Obolonskyi District encompasses territories far beyond of its historical neighborhood sharing the same name. It was formed on 3 March 1975 and initially called as Minskyi District. In 2001 it was renamed to its historical name. Its current population is 290,000 inhabitants. Overview During Soviet rule of Ukraine, Kyiv had 14 administrative districts. In the early 21st century, a new law was passed and the city's administrative division was reorganized into 10 districts with different borders and new names. Battle Of Kyiv (2022)
The battle of Kyiv was part of the Kyiv offensive in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine for control of Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, and surrounding districts. The combatants were elements of the Russian Armed Forces and Ukrainian Ground Forces. The battle lasted from 25 February 2022 to 2 April 2022 and ended with the withdrawal of Russian forces. Initially, Russian forces captured key areas to the north and west of Kyiv, leading to international speculation of the city's imminent fall. However, stiff Ukrainian resistance sapped the momentum. Poor Russian logistics and tactical decisions helped the defenders to thwart efforts at encirclement, and, after a month of protracted fighting, Ukrainian forces mounted successful counterattacks. Subdivisions Of Kyiv
Subdivisions of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, include the formal administrative subdivision into urban districts (raions) and the more detailed informal subdivision into historical neighborhoods. Kyiv is divided in two halves split by Dnieper, therefore there exist two important parts "left-bank Kyiv" and "right-bank Kyiv" in reference to the Dnieper. History of subdivision The first known formal subdivision of Kyiv dates to 1810 when the city was subdivided into 4 parts: Pechersk, Starokyiv, and the first and the second parts of Podil. Podilskyi District
The Podilskyi District ( uk, Подільський район) is an urban district of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Its population was 177,563 at the 2001 census. The district takes its name from the historic Podil neighborhood which it includes within its boundaries. The Podilskyi District as an administrative entity was formed in 1921 on one of the largest historical neighborhoods in Kyiv. In May 2001 the Podilskyi District celebrated the 80th anniversary of its foundation. The district remains one of the main business, transport, and industrial areas of Kyiv.
