Kuniaki Shibata
Kuniaki Shibata (柴田 国明, born March 29, 1947, in Hitachi, Japan) is a Japanese former professional boxer who competed from 1965 to 1977. He is a world champion in two weight classes, having held the WBC and ''The Ring featherweight titles from 1970 to 1972, the WBA and ''The Ring'' super-featherweight titles in 1973, and the WBC super-featherweight title from 1974 to 1975. Biography Shibata won his debut match in 1965 with a first-round knockout, and fought for the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation featherweight title in 1969, but lost by sixth-round knockout. In April 1970 he challenged for the vacant Japanese featherweight title, and won by tenth-round knockout. He relinquished the title to challenge WBC featherweight champion Vicente Saldivar, and won the title when Saldivar gave up after the twelfth round. Ben Villaflor
Benjamin Villaflor (born November 10, 1952) is a Filipino former professional boxer who competed from 1966 to 1976. He was a two-time WBA and ''The Ring super-featherweight champion, having held it from 1972 to 1973 and from 1973 to 1976. Professional boxing career According to records, Villaflor began his career as a professional boxer when he was only thirteen years old, on October 1, 1966, beating Flash Javier by decision in four rounds. Most of Villaflor's early bouts' records were not well kept, therefore, although October 1, 1966 appears to have been the date of Villaflor's professional debut, this is not known with certainty, and neither is the location where the fight took place. Ernesto Marcel
Ernesto Marcel (23 May 1948 – 29 June 2020) was a Panamanian professional boxer who competed from 1966 to 1974. He held the WBA featherweight title from 1972 to 1974 and challenged for the WBC featherweight title in 1971. Career Making his professional debut as a teenager in 1966, Marcel built up a record of 31–3–1, which included a second round knockout of Bernardo Caraballo, who had previously fought Fighting Harada and Éder Jofre for world titles, and a tenth-round technical knockout loss to a young Roberto Durán, the only stoppage defeat of Marcel's career. On 11 November 1971, Marcel faced WBC featherweight champion Kuniaki Shibata in Matsuyama, Japan, but the fight was scored a draw, meaning Shibata retained his title. Clemente Sánchez
Clemente "Xicoténcatl" Sánchez (9 July 1947 – 25 December 1978) was a Mexican professional boxer. Professional career Sánchez turned professional in 1963 and won the Lineal and WBC featherweight title with a 3rd-round knockout over Kuniaki Shibata in 1972. He lost the title in his first defense by a technical knockout to Jose Legra, but Sanchez had been stripped of his WBC belt after failing to make weight prior to the fight. He retired in 1975. Death Sánchez was shot and killed in his home city of Monterrey in a traffic dispute in 1978, by a man who later identified himself to police as Carlos Rodriguez Treviño. Edward "Eddie" Townsend (October 5, 1914 – February 1, 1988) was an American professional boxing trainer. He is revered in Japan for training several boxing world champions. An award given to boxing trainers was established in his honor and a boxing gym in Osaka, bears his name. Biography Townsend was born to a Japanese mother and an American father in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii. His mother lived in Yamaguchi Prefecture, before immigrating to the United States and his father worked as a lawyer. He began boxing at age 14 and was undefeated in 12 fights as a professional, before losing his 13th bout the day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor (December 6, 1941).
