Kudghat
Kudghat is a neighbourhood of South Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal. Location Kudghat is located on either banks of the Adi Ganga, the main flow of the Hooghly River from the 15th to 17th century connecting Kolkata to the Bidyadhari River to the east. Further deepened by William Tolly for transportation and trade purposes, it has virtually dried up and now serve as a prime drainage outlet during the rainy seasons. Transportation facilities The large Kudghat bus depot serves as a terminus of a number of state buses and a private bus. The Netaji Metro Station is the first of several to be constructed over the Adi Ganga which stretches on to New Garia as part of the first extension to the network of Kolkata Metro. The naming of the station had given rise to a controversy as no historical evidence has been found showing any link between Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the Kudghat area. History Early attempts In the September 1919 session of the Imperial Legislative Council at Shimla, a committee was set up by W. E. Crum that recommended a metro line for Kolkata (formerly Calcutta). This line was supposed to connect Bagmari in the east to Benaras Road, Salkia, in Howrah in the west via a tunnel beneath Hooghly River. The estimated construction costs were £3,526,154, about based on current exchange rates, and the proposed deadline was 1925–1926. The proposed line was long, about shorter than the current East-West Corridor, which would connect East Bengal Railway in Bagmari and East Indian Railway in Benaras Road. Kolkata Metro
The Kolkata Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Kolkata in West Bengal, India. , it has two operational lines, a line from Dakshineswar to Kavi Subhash and a line from Salt Lake Sector V to Sealdah, for a total of . New Garia is a neighbourhood located in the eastern part of Garia, Kolkata, India. William Tolly
Colonel William Tolly (1715–1784) was an officer of the British East India Company, who later settled down in Calcutta, noted for creating Tolly's Nullah. Life-sketch He served as officer of British East India Company and retired as a colonel. He settled down near Calcutta and decided to dig out an old channel of Adi Ganga (a branch of Hooghly River) at his own cost to make it navigable for ships. This canal ''( nullah )'' was dug out by him in years 1775-76 became operational in 1777 and came to be known as Tolly's Nullah. He de-silted, deepened and opened this old channel as a water way connecting the Calcutta Port to the rivers of the eastern Bengal such as Bidyadhari and Matla making it a part of Calcutta and Eastern Canals, extending over a length of 1,127 miles, of which 47 miles was length of Tolly's Nullah.
