Kronenburgerpark
The Kronenburgerpark is a park in the center of Nijmegen, the Netherlands. It is close to the Central Railway Station and the Lange Hezelstraat. Where the park touches the Parkweg are the remains of the medieval walls with the Kruittoren (powder tower) (built around 1425). History After Nijmegen lost the status of fortified town in the Vestingwet (Constitution) (1874), the demolition of the fortifications started in 1876 and plans were made for the Explanation or expansion of the city. In 1880, the Utrecht garden architect Hendrik Copijn presented his plan for a city park to the west of the old town, where the entire city wall would be demolished. This plan did not make it. The garden and landscape architect Liévin Rosseels from Leuven came in 1881 with a new design that was approved. He laid the Kronenburgerpark in 1881–82 just outside the old city walls, between the Parkweg and the new Kronenburgersingel. Nijmegen
Nijmegen (;; Spanish and it, Nimega. Nijmeegs: ''Nimwèège'' ) is the largest city in the Dutch province of Gelderland and tenth largest of the Netherlands as a whole, located on the Waal river close to the German border. It is about 60 km south east of Utrecht and 50 km north east of Eindhoven. Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, the second to be recognized as such in Roman times, and in 2005 celebrated 2,000 years of existence. Frank Boeijen
Franciscus Johannes Maria (Frank) Boeijen (born 27 November 1957 in Nijmegen) is a Dutch singer and guitarist. His best known songs are ''Kronenburg Park (Ga die Wereld Uit)'' about a prostitute, ''Zwart Wit'' about the racial murder of Kerwin Duinmeijer in Amsterdam and ''Twee gezichten'' about a split personality. Having been in the music business for 25 years, he received the Edison award for his career achievements in 2005. Biography Frank Boeijen Groep Boeijen grew up in a family of ten children; his older brothers introduced him to Bob Dylan and Neil Young. In 1979 Boeijen released his first album, a joint effort with Wout Pennings produced by singer Rob de Nijs; Henk Wanders (drums) and Nels Busch (bass) were recruited as backing-musicians. Pennings left due to artistic differences; Will Theunissen (guitar) replaced him, and in November 1979 Frank Boeijen Groep played their first gig. Battle Of Nijmegen
The Battle of Nijmegen, also known as the Liberation of Nijmegen, occurred from 17 to 20 September 1944, as part of Operation Market Garden during World War II. The Allies' primary goal was to capture the two bridges over the Waal River at Nijmegen – the road route over the '' Waalbrug'' (Waal Bridge) and Nijmegen railway bridge – and relieve the British 1st Airborne Division and Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade at Arnhem, 10 miles (16 km) north of Nijmegen. The Allied infantry units at Arnhem were surrounded by German forces, and involved in heavy fighting for control of bridges over the Rhine. Delays caused by hastily-organised German reinforcements at Nijmegen ultimately led to the failure of Operation Market Garden. It took the Allies longer than expected to secure a land route to Arnhem, where the British and Polish forces were forced south of the Rhine and sustained massive casualties. Pierre Cuypers
Petrus Josephus Hubertus "Pierre" Cuypers (16 May 1827 – 3 March 1921) was a Dutch architect. His name is most frequently associated with the Amsterdam Central Station (1881–1889) and the Rijksmuseum (1876–1885), both in Amsterdam. More representative for his oeuvre, however, are numerous churches, of which he designed more than 100. Moreover, he restored many monuments. Biography Cuypers was born in Roermond, the son of a church painter, and grew up in surroundings in which interest for art was encouraged. After he studied at the urban college in Roermond, he moved to Antwerp in 1844 to study architecture at the Royal art academy. He was taught by Frans-Andries Durlet, Frans Stoop and Ferdinand Berckmans, all pioneers of the neo-Gothic architecture in Belgium. Cuypers was a good student; in 1849, he gained the ''Prix d'Excellence'' of the academy.
