Kritimys
''Kritimys'', also known as the Cretan giant rat is an extinct genus of muridae, murid rodent that was endemic to the island of Crete during the Pleistocene. There are two known species, ''K. kiridus'' from the Early-Mid Pleistocene, and its descendant ''K. catreus'' from the Late Pleistocene. As with most island rodents, ''Kritimys'' was larger than its mainland relatives. References

The history of Crete goes back to the 7th millennium BC, preceding the ancient Minoan civilization by more than four millennia. Prehistoric Crete In 2002, the paleontologist Gerard Gierlinski discovered what he claimed were fossil footprints left by ancient human relatives 5,600,000 years ago, but the claim is controversial. Excavations in South Crete in 2008–2009 revealed stone tools at least 130,000 years old.
