Kris Davis
Kris Davis (born 1980) is a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. Early life Davis was born in Vancouver in 1980 and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. She studied classical piano from the age of six and discovered jazz while a high school student. She transcribed performances by pianists Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett. She later reported that, "By the eighth grade I knew I wanted to be a jazz musician." She later majored in jazz piano at the University of Toronto. Later life and career Davis moved to New York in 2001. After her first album, '' Lifespan'', was recorded in 2003, Davis says she "decided not to play chords anymore, just to play lines." In 2009, Davis played solo concerts during a tour of Portugal. She followed this with a solo piano album, '' Aeriol Piano'', which included sections for prepared piano. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on national, regional, and local musical cultures, which gave rise to different styles. Tom Rainey
Tom Rainey (born 1957) is an American jazz drummer. Career After attending Berklee College of Music he moved to New York in 1979. He has played with Tim Berne, Nels Cline, Drew Gress, Mark Helias, Fred Hersch, Tony Malaby, Simon Nabatov, Tom Varner, and Kenny Werner. Rainey worked with Berne in the 1990s and 2000s in the bands Big Satan, Hard Cell, Paraphrase, and Science Friction. Tyshawn Sorey
Tyshawn Sorey (born July 8, 1980) is an American composer, multi-instrumentalist, and professor of contemporary music. Sorey has received accolades for performances, recordings, and compositions ranging from improvised solo percussion to opera, with work in best-of lists for both classical and jazz music. ''The New Yorker'' included Sorey in their annual "Notable Performances and Recordings" lists for 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020; the pandemic-era entry was for premieres "cast in unconventional concerto form". His prolific output during a time of heavy restrictions on live performance led a ''New York Times'' critic to call him 2020's "composer of the year". Ingrid Laubrock
Ingrid Laubrock (born 24 September 1970) is a German jazz saxophonist, who primarily plays tenor saxophone but also performs and records on soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones. She studied with Jean Toussaint, Dave Liebman and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Laubrock moved to London, England in 1989, and became a member of the F-IRE Collective. In 2008 she moved to New York City. In 1998, she released her first solo album ''Who Is It?'' and was nominated for the 'Rising Star of the Year' award at the 1999 BT Jazz Awards. She was also nominated for the BBC Award 'Rising Star' in 2005 and in 2009 won the SWR Jazz Award for her recording ''Sleepthief'', featuring pianist Liam Noble and drummer Tom Rainey (her husband). Michael Bisio
Michael Bisio (March 4, 1955 Troy, New York, Troy, New York) is an American jazz double bassist, composer, and bandleader. Since 2009 he has been the bassist for the Matthew Shipp Trio. Bisio appears on over 100 CDs, leading on 12 CDs and co-leading on another dozen. Bisio has composed over one hundred works which have been performed in clubs, concert venues, and festivals. They have been broadcast over assorted media. Most have been recorded; some were composed for films and theater, and one found was used in animation. In his book ''Jackson Street After Hours'', music critic Paul de Barros called Bisio one of the heirs to Seattle's earthy yet innovative tradition and marked his compositional style as "a spare, bluesy sound, the sweet- and-sour timbres favored by Charles Mingus." Eivind Opsvik
Eivind Opsvik (born 1973 in Oslo, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician (upright bass) and composer, the son of the Norwegian interior and furniture designer Peter Opsvik. Career Opsvik is a graduate of the Norwegian Academy of Music (1993–97), and he made himself evident on the Oslo jazz scene from the early 1990s, before moving to New York in 1998, where has been living since. He is thoroughly involved in composing, recording, mixing and producing music, as he manages a studio in his basement, from where he is running the record label Loyal Label. His main projects are 'Overseas' and 'Opsvik & Jennings', besides his solo project. The studios are on Pardee Avenue in the Liberty Village neighbourhood of Toronto.
