Krewe Of Barkus
The Mystic Krewe of Barkus is a New Orleans Mardi Gras parade where participants are dogs costumed according to a central parade theme. The annual event is organized by the Krewe of Barkus, a nonprofit organization that promotes adoption and rescue of homeless animals in New Orleans. The Mystic Krewe of Barkus makes fun of the more traditional New Orleans Mardi Gras parades and is the only Mardi Gras " krewe" in New Orleans created for dogs. History The Mystic Krewe of Barkus traces its history to a November 1992 meeting of the Margaret Orr fan club. Orr is a meteorologist for New Orleans television station WDSU and regularly participates in the event as a Mistress of Ceremonies. The parade evolved from a bar prank, as a member of the club hatched the idea for a canine-centered "krewe" and it took hold. The holiday of Mardi Gras is celebrated in all of Louisiana, including the city of New Orleans. Celebrations are concentrated for about two weeks before and through Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday (the start of lent in the Western Christian tradition). Usually there is one major parade each day (weather permitting); many days have several large parades. The largest and most elaborate parades take place the last five days of the Mardi Gras season. Krewe
A krewe (pronounced "crew") is a social organization that puts on a parade or ball for the Carnival season. The term is best known for its association with Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans, but is also used in other Carnival celebrations around the Gulf of Mexico, such as the Gasparilla Pirate Festival in Tampa, Florida, Springtime Tallahassee, and Krewe of Amalee in DeLand, Fl with the Mardi Gras on Mainstreet Parade as well as in La Crosse, Wisconsin and at the Saint Paul Winter Carnival. Margaret Orr
Margaret Orr is the chief meteorologist for WDSU in New Orleans. Career A graduate of Louisiana State University and a certificate holder from the meteorology program at Mississippi State University, Orr had a fascination with weather ever since Hurricane Betsy hit New Orleans in 1965. She started her weather forecasting career in Charleston, South Carolina but returned home to New Orleans in July 1979, when she joined WDSU, and she has remained there ever since. Matt Rinard
Matt Rinard is an American born artist living in New Orleans, Louisiana. Born in Meridian, Mississippi on October 24, 1964, he is the son of an Admiral in the United States Navy. By the time he was 16 he had moved to six different states. He attended N.O.C.C.A. New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in 1980 and abandoned the school in 1981 to attend Holy Cross High School in the Lower Ninth Ward. He received a bachelor's degree from Florida State University in Graphic Design in 1987 and continued his artistic endeavors at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts from 1990 to 2003 under the tutelage of Auseklis Ozols. In 1988 Matt started his own publishing company Spilled Inc. producing aquatint lithographs. His first publisher was Persian Boy Publishing producing limited edition hand pulled serigraphs.
