Kraków Governorate (russian: Краковская губерния; pl, Gubernia krakowska) was an administrative unit (a governorate) of Congress Poland. It was created in 1837 from the Kraków Voivodeship; in 1844 it was merged into a larger Radom Governorate. Governorates Of The Russian Empire
A governorate, gubernia, province, or government ( rus, губе́рния, p=ɡʊˈbʲɛrnʲɪjə, also romanized ; uk, губернія, huberniia), was a major and principal administrative subdivision of the Russian Empire. After the empire was ended by revolution, they remained as subdivisions in Belarus, the Russian republic, Ukraine, and in the Soviet Union from its formation until 1929. The term is also translated as ''government'', '' governorate'', or ''province''. A governorate was ruled by a governor (, ''gubernator''), a word borrowed from Latin , in turn from Greek . Congress Poland
Congress Poland, Congress Kingdom of Poland, or Russian Poland, formally known as the Kingdom of Poland, was a polity created in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna as a semi-autonomous Polish state, a successor to Napoleon's Duchy of Warsaw. It was established when the French ceded a part of Polish territory to the Russian Empire following France's defeat in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1915, during World War I, it was replaced by the German-controlled nominal Regency Kingdom until Poland regained independence in 1918. Following the partitions of Poland at the end of the 18th century, Poland ceased to exist as an independent nation for 123 years. Kraków Voivodeship (1816–1837)
The Kraków Voivodeship was a voivodeship of the Congress Poland, that existed from 1816 to 1837. Until 6 December 1816, its capital was Miechów, and since then it was Kielce. It was established on 16 January 1816, from Kraków Department, and existed until 23 February 1837, when it was replaced by the Kraków Governorate. During the January Uprising, the Polish National Government, announced the re-establishment of the voivodeships with the borders from 1816, reestablishing the administration of the Kraków Voivodeship within the part of Radom Governorate. Lesser Poland, often known by its Polish language, Polish name Małopolska ( la, Polonia Minor), is a historical region situated in southern and south-eastern Poland. Its capital and largest city is Kraków. Throughout centuries, Lesser Poland developed a separate culture featuring diverse architecture, National costumes of Poland, folk costumes, Krakowiak, dances, cuisine, traditions and a rare Lesser Polish dialect.
