Koungheul Department
Koungheul is the name of one of 45 departments of Senegal, as well as the name of Koungheul Arrondissement and the commune of Koungheul, the principal settlement of the department. In 2006, the new Koungheul Department was created as a division of Kaffrine Region, by carving off the eastern half of the Kaffrine Department. The 14 regions of Senegal are subdivided into 46 departments and 103 arrondissements (neither of which have administrative function) and by ''collectivités locales'' (the 14 ''régions'', 110 ''communes'', and 320 ''communautés rurales'') which elect administrative officers. Since three new regions increased the number of departments to 45 in 2008, the most recent addition, of Keur Massar, in May 2008 brings the number to 46. Koungheul
Koungheul is a commune in central Senegal in the department of the same name. It lies in the region of Kaffrine and is situated between the towns of Kaolack and Tambacounda. There are about 15,000 inhabitants, most of whom are Wolof people. Transport It is served by a railway station on the Dakar-Niger Railway. Climate Koungheul has a hot semi-arid climate (Köppen ''BSh'') with no rainfall from November to May and moderate to heavy rainfall from June to October. A department (, ) is an administrative or political division in several countries. Departments are the first-level divisions of 11 countries, nine in the Americas and two in Africa. An additional 10 countries use departments as second-level divisions, eight in Africa, and one each in the Americas and Europe.
